Smile turbo choice/injectors advice needed!

Ok i have a 2001 bug with sti8 top mount intercooler and scoop/undertray. I want to upgrade my turbo to one of the following:td05 16G or a 18G. Now i know if you go for 340+ horse then the gearbox will go pop (i can afford to buy a 6 speed if needs must) but because i live in orkney and only get 95 ron then the car wont make as much power (car will be mapped to suit but wont make as much as it would mapped on vpower/ultimate). So would i be ok getting the 18G? Or a totally different turbo from those listed before?

I have decatted the up and down pipe but have a prodrive sti cat in the middle. Should i remove this?

What injectors do you reccomend and where from? Dont fancy second hand sti ones would prefer new!

All the work will be carried out by andy forrest and AWD motorsport and will ask them their opinions but value yours to!

Cheers

I had my WRX 02 Bugeye running 300 odd BHP on a TD05 16 G supplied by Andy Forrest with a few mods including STi injectors and it drove very nicely

Mark Aigin at Lateral Performance can supply injectors (as can AF and others)

For on road manners the IHI VF35 turbo is closely matched for the TD05 16G but I'd recommend asking Andy Forrest about a Modified TD04 unit he does.........should go really well with your set up and Andy Forrest knows it inside and out

Ok cool. only thing is i would be worried i dont see much difference between what i have now circa 250-260 horse to the modified tdo4 unit 290-300. If im going to buy new injectors and fpr and remap and fitting costs (never mind the coilovers whiteline goodies and brembos i have bought) then i would like to be seeing 330+ bhp and torque?

Cheers for your advise though!

I'm a bit jealous over your home turf
I assume you'll be running around on narrow, curvy roads, often wet?
Then IMHO you should stay away from too big (laggy) turbos, you'll want midrange torque! I'd say 16g or vf34/35 or similar. These should give you well above 300. Mind you, IMHO I doubt you'll see 300 on an AFP04H with your setup and fuel, and neither see 330 on a vf35. But bigger turbos will still be too laggy for good response on 'back roads' (IMHO).
And if you buy new injectors, size them to not need FPR, save a penny (or not, inj. will be dearer) 550cc's should be fine on their own, 440cc's with FPR.
Be careful with your grip out there in the wet!!
:-)

I ran 353bhp on normal STI pinkies with. standard 3 bar FPR, so I'd go for a set of them personally.

Bugeye as well with vf28,pink injectors, walbro fuel pump, sport cat downpipe, decat up pipe, decat centre, panel filter and JGM remap saw me at 333bhp & 310 lb/ft torque (surrey rolling road)
Turbo starts to spool at about 2800 rpm and at about 4000rpm makes 290 torques which climbs nicely until just over 6000 then dies off a little, maxboost at 1.3 bar.

Cheers for your advice guys! You are indeed right that the driving i do is mainly on back roads so lag is something i dont want to much! Just go a price for a set of flow matched 650cc injectors and a td05 16g turbo (big injectors for future proofing) came in about 1050 including vat. If am spending this kind of money i just really want to see/feel the difference!

650cc injectors are too big for a TD05 16 G.
A TD05 18G is not a laggy turbo. Bearing in mind you are running 95RON you may be disappointed with the TD05 16G.
In your position I would go for a set of STi Pinks and a TD05 18G and expect 350 bhp conservatively with potential for more.
I can supply you a new turbo, £650 + VAT and pink injectors, secondhand are under £200.

Ok cool. Second hand injectors dont appeal that much to me. Would the sti ones be enough to supply a td05 18g? If i went for the 650cc injectors with this turbo would it not be better? No need for FPR? Not running at full duty?

There's no need for an FPR with the pinks either, apart from the standard 3 bar one which is already fitted to your fuel rail from the factory

I've got a FPR as well, but in all honesty it wasn't needed as at 350 odd bhp there was still enough headroom with the pinks at standard fuel pressure.

I have a 18g, wish i had fitted it from the start and saved myself a lot of money and messing about, it has been fun though. My 18g makes 1bar @ 3100 and the turbo has more to offer with a extra couple of mods this is based on MY00. Gear box is fine so far (touch wood). You will not be disappointed with the 18g, 550cc nismo's will be fine.

Just make sure to ask your mapper first, though... Mine told me it would be fine without and it was, but I'm sure it varies
