Had my car in for its 22.5K service yesterday.

I noticed on the way home that there was a bit of light scraping noise from the driver's side rear wheel. It sounded almost as thought the brake pad was resting lightly on the disc.

I contacted the service dept today and was told that they had the pads out to inspect them, and that the noise would go away after a couple of days, it was just the pads being slightly out of alignment, and this would wear off.

Well, tonight driving home the noise has gotten so loud that I can hear it with the windows up.

Also, when I reverse there is a horrible scraping sound of metal on metal.

Funnily enough, the noise does not go away, or even lessen, when I apply the brakes either lightly or full force.

So, anyone got any ideas. I have had a quick look and the pads are there and appear to be in place correclty.

I will be taking it back to the dealer tomorrow, but I don't want to do any permanent damage.

Andrew.

Not too technical but may be a backplate catching the disc - seen that happen before

Yes I agree, the backplate can be bent onto the disc. I've had it done to me by a Vauxhall dealer.(when I had a Vauxhall!)

Well I finally convinced the dealer to have another look at it. They agreed to have a look to 'put my mind at ease' ...

Turns out that the spring clip that holds the two sides of the brakes together had come undone (never been done up properly) on one side and had been bouncing against the disc.

I cannot see any damage to the disc, but the attitude to a problem obviously related to a brakes problem scares me jsut a little ...

Andrew
I am sure that a letter of apology and a free service voucher are already in the post

Any other dealers local to you?

Hey Paul,

can I have some of whatever you are on

Unfortunately this is the only dealer in my area. This hasn't been an overly encouraging experience.

Write to the service manager and tell him that you were not overly impressed with the level of service that your car should have received, that the fault on your car could have been more than just a clip and it could have lead to an accident. Basically tell him that the level of competence was not what you expected from a dealer with a reputation like theirs (the creeping comes in here to see if you can get your next service free!!) 30k is an expensive one!!
