What to do next?
#1
I have got a MY97 which is in need of some new mods, the problem is what to do?
It is a pretty standard car with the exception of a TSL Group N Backbox (thanks Trouser very pleased) & the ITG panel filter.
I just don't now what to do next? A friend of mind has an A3 1.8 Turbo Sport which he has just had chipped, this took it from 150bhp to 197bhp.
Should I look at chipping my scooby has anyone done this?
I have heard lots of bad press reguarding chipping scoobys, My friends chip is made by AMD and cost about £450.
Other option is to replace the downpipe / mid sections?
Has anyone got any other suggestions?
What is the differnce between my car and the prodrive examples (RB5 / P1 etc) do they just have different ecu's, exhaust, or is more mechanical than that?
Any advice would be great

'Chipping' is very common. Range from Superchips (cheap, but results vary widely and pretty crude) to a Subaru sanctioned 'chip' (£1600!), the Unichip (see powerstation.org.uk) and fully remappable replacement ECU's (Possum Link, Motec, Pectel etc) which cost £1k plus
For a standard UK car a full decat exhaust and an induction kit/performance panel filter is a good first step which should release 30bhp ish and costs are reasonable.
You can also get good results with a boost controller, or even a bleed valve - though self discipline is called for here as the temptation to over-do it can be great, then your engine goes *pop*.
Have a look in drivetrain section, spend some time reading posts. Then ask some questions.

Sorry read post a bit more carefully. The Prodrive versions of your car have a RAMAIR panel filter, some new hosing, a decat centre section and a new chip - this is the £1600 I mentioned above.

Hi Martyn,
If I were you I'd change the down pipe and centre section.
It made a huge difference doing the d/p on my 95 STI.
Also the lack of cats is good for the pops and bangs !
Do you run it on Super ?

What about the Dawes device? Have a look at www.dawesdevices.com there are a few threads onn here about these. I cant find anything bad said about them, and you get a big gain for a relatively small amount of cash.
On my 97 car, I put on Brembo 4 pot brakes (big discs), steel braided hoses, 17" Oz SuperT wheels, bigger rear spoiler and it already had quickshift when I got it.
If I still had it (got a My01 WRX now), I would go the downpipe and centre section route. I would personally leave the chip, unless i came across a Prodrive one, but then again I'm no expert.
