Default Got my car keyed, repair advice needed please.

I hope this is the right section to post in!

Not so long ago I had my black mica STi keyed Do you think this could be done DIY? or is it best to leave it to the professionals? The scratch is 8-10 inches long, about 2-3 inches catches my nail as I pass across it. I was tempted to take it to the dealer (CVC Cardiff).

Also scratched my glove box while installing an amp cable , is this repairable.

What do think?

( Pics won't show in the thread so you'll have to click the link, apologies!)

I've got the gun, etc but it's the gold flake that worries me. I was hoping I could use a road rash kit (or similar) to repair it but I think it's a little too deep. The cars a keeper so I want to make sure it looks as good as the day I picked it up!

You could try the dr color majic (I think that's the name). It is pretty good on scratches so worth a go - there are loads of posts on the forum.

I've just used that new scratch stuff on my motor and its pretty good, best stuff ive ever used

Yours doesn't look that deep so might be worth a try for a tenner
available from Asda (mine wasn't found in the car section) called GS27, use a little at a time

good luck with it tho, nice colour black mica

A professional detailer should be able to repair this with wet sanding without the need to repsray the whole door. Register in A world for detailers...

Thank for the suggestions guys. I don't think the JML GS27 stuff would cut it (excuse the pun!).

Fpan, wet sanding sounds good but would it thin the paint coat down too much? Being a proud owner of a Meguiars G220 I don't fancy polishing the scooby one day and going down to the metal!

personally when ever i have had cars keyed, i've just touched it up, it will never be perfect unless you get a pro to do it. and in my experience if its been keyed once, it'll be done again. i once parked a car in town for 5 mins came back and it had been keyed.

I think I'd try to patch it in with a touch up kit but use a safety pin to get small amounts of paint where it's needed.
Then go over it with T-Cut or similar around the affected area. If you put a small block behind the cloth you can cut blobs of new paint down quite quickly without undue damage to fully cured paintwork.

After that, let it dry out for a few days before trying to get the shine back.

So far my preferred option is to vindaloo’s (fill the ****** up with touchup paint).

I will take some Pics if I do it this weekend. If it all goes pete tong I will hand it to the professionals!

Are you not very popular or something

Sorry, just the way it reads

To the O.P., I would personally look at two options.

1. Go to a detailer and see what their take is on it and if it's worth risking wet sanding.

2. Go to a respected bodyshop and quote up a respray for the door.

I can't tell from the pics how deep the scratch is, so can't compare it to my personal experience of having a car keyed.

There's no way a detailer will get that out, no matter how good they are. There is no paint left where it's been keyed, so is going to need painting I'm afraid.

Had my car keyed, black mica but with the blue fleck, and took it to a proper valet place and its not perfect but does look way better. I think he said that they used a similar kind of thing to printers ink.
Better than the £600+ to respray the whole side of the car!
(remind me not to get a metalic coloured car again)

I'd add Chips away or similar as an option - they come to you and fix it.

They sorted a scratch on my wifes old car and you couldn't tell it was there even if you looked for it afterwards
