I have a Thundercat with Leo Vinci pipe (sounds gorgeous), and my girlfriend has got a Honda RVF400.
The pair of us have been riding for 4 years and average about 8000 miles a year on them.
I'm currently looking at getting the GSXR 750 - or deciding to spend the money on the Scooby instead! It's a tough decision

Until recently a Ducati 888 Superbike, but we had a small encounter with a speeding BMW so it has gone to the scrapyard in the sky, I also have my fair share of metalwork installed. Hoping to get a 996 either this year or maybe wait till next and do up my scooby first.

Can anyone recommend a decent bike that I could buy and do up??? i.e. buy for about £500 (in bits probably) then do it up at the weekends/evenings. Could do with something along the NC30/400cc route, with cheap and available parts???

Got a Yamaha Fazer 600, always fancied one of those NC30's look like you could throw it about like a mountain bike. They can shift too but I'm sure all that high revving gives your a numb **** on a long ride.
I think BIKE did a great article last year with an NC30 v's R1 over different roads and although the R1 won they weren't sure if it was worth the licence busting potential on the straights as the NC was so much fun

I love bikes mate don't you?
I race a GSXR750WX....not very successfully I might add. I've crashed more times than I've finished, and I've got so much metal in me legs, that when I die, my family are gonna weigh me in. I was never really into cars until my mate persuaded me to get my scooby....never had so much fun on 4 wheels....having said that, I cant wait for summer.

Havent we done this one before?
I've got a Thunderace and have been riding 12 years!!! (makes me feel old! (I'm not!!)).
Mike T, I had a test ride on the SP1 last summer and was very dissapointed with it. I was hoping it was going to be Honda's answer to the R1 (it's not!!!!). Disapointing handling, crap fuel injection and majorly thirsty. I've got my eye on the GSXR1000 - now that looks like the bike to have
Matt.

Your all don't know what your missing.
Bikes today are so very quick that its a nightmare just trying to keep somewhere near the speed limit.
So many car drivers don't even see you.
Get an enduro bike thats road registered and ride the rights of way. We meet every Sunday and release all the stress that builds up during the week.
Also no speed cameras on the lanes so no lining the pockets of this ---- government.
By the way, i have a Husaberg 600.

Dream Weaver,
From my memory(in the mags) I don't think the NC30 is that easy to work on and the biggest issues they have are electrical problems.
I don't think its an ideal working on bike due to its hi tech small engine, loads of bodywork and the fact thats its a rare import type thingy. My recommendation would be a Suzuki Bandit 600, Cheap to buy, Easier to work on and parts readily available.
They have around 60-70 HP which is plenty !!!! Even better would be a big thumper trail bike !!! Loads of fun and very simple....
Cheers

I got a XT600, for some fun on the road, but I bought it for off road fun.
Trouble is I can't find any info regarding RUPS.
Know where I should start looking for details on this?

Miserable,
On the Explorer OS maps (Orange Cover) Byways are marked with a line of green +++++++ symbols, On the Landranger OS maps(Pink cover) Byways are marked with +-+-+-+ usually in Red.
Be wary of driving on RUPPS (Road used as Public Path) as different County Councils have differing views, generally whilst in the eyes of the law it is not illegal to cause a motor vehicle to be driven on a RUPP, you may well have to be prepared to prove your right to do so if challenged, by the Land owner or Police for example. Check with your local CC, they hold detailed maps which you are entitled to view.
The Green Lanes Association site is pretty good...

I am without 2 wheel transport at the mo, but I do have shares in the great scrapyard in the sky. Destroyed a ZX6R two years ago in a 25MPH T Bone. The bike wasn't too bad until the dozy car driver panicked and let out the clutch before turning off the engine, killing the bike and running over my leg in the process. Use the fully comp insurance to buy a newly relesed R1. Bolted on full skorpion race exhaust. Loudest and quickest thing I have ever been on. You can outrun helicopters on these... Got a front wheel blowout at approx 110 MPH. Destroyed the bike and burned the **** out of my 1.5 mm brazilian cowhide leathers. Took insurance money to bike shop. Decided that 2000 Fireblade was the one for me. Got to roundabout at end of road, forgot about new tyres/release compound, bedding in brakes etc (dooh!!!). Used large truck to aviod hitting other large truck (not my choice really. Bike was a write-off with 3 miles on the clock) Decided that with 3 potentially fatal crashes in 2 years I would probably be safer locked in a padded cell. (This feeling usually goes away on the first sunny morning in April.) Now... anyone know a cheap insurance firm for bikes?
