uneven tyre wear

my 98' wagon's tyres wear far more on the outside (front tyres). what causes this, and how can i fix it? is it something a tyre place that does wheel alignment can do?

Just had the same issue on my car, 4 wheel alignment was done, and the guy said it was extremely bad, and he wasn't surprised my tyres were sha**ed.
