Dangerous stuff custard, there was a big explosion at a custard factory in the UK, early 80's, almost any form of dust can explode in the right circumstances, stuff like sawdust, coal, cement, almost anything organic.

That was the Kraft food factory at Banbury where they moved the Bird's Custard production from Digbeth in Birmingham.

You are spot on about dust. I've forgotten what the dust/air ratio is, but a chance spark such as an inspection light bulb breaking can be enough to wreck an entire factory as happened at an animal feed plant in Somerset. The front of a 100 foot high brick and concrete building was split in two.

Most mechanical handling systems will have an "explosion" panel to allow such explosions to vent somewhere safely. In my day we used a couple of layers of varnished brown parcel paper which could blow out without wrecking the machinery.

At another site in Banbury, Cadbury's used to store all their Creme Eggs. The eggs are made in two halves. They put the white creme in one half of the chocolate shell with a dab of the yellow "yolk" on top before gluing the other half of the chocolate shell on the top. The white stuff has yeast in it so it rises like dough and grows around the "yolk".

One year, they got the yeast mix wrong and all the eggs blew up in the warehouse! You've never seen such a mess - rack upon rack 50 feet high and 300 hundred feet long covered in gloop!! Millions of Creme Eggs ended up in a local tip under complete secrecy as Cadbury's didn't want any publicity.
