Default How to solve understeer

HI all

I was going around a round about yesterday, not too fast but noticed massive under steer, i checked the tyres and they have about 3000 miles left on them, so it was not that, it was not wet or damp out...so is it that the car has not been set up right or what?? I have Potenza's standard fitment tyres on my Hawkeye, i presume they are a good tyre??

Your thoughts.

Err, that would make it worse as you are taking the weight off the front wheels!

Stiffer rear ARB and new droplinks work well

Have you been round the roundabout previously and NOT understeered...?

It could be sooooo many things that are causing understeer that all we can do is give you possibilities really, any of which could be right or wrong.

It could quite simply have been that you were driving too fast, which is easily curable.

It was not fast...fast as it were but i would have thought that it would not unersteer anywhere near as bad as that. I have been round it a few times and its always the same . I just dont think its supposed to do that??

Either Mocom Racing in North Weald or Xtremes in Boreham. Need to go to a specialist as they won't just point your wheels straight, they can recomend settings to make turn in sharper to reduce understeer. Checks are usually £40 with £80 seeing full check and full re-allignement to proper fast road settings.

Makes the world of difference before you decide to spend any money on parts

I've had the geometry set-up by Mocom Racing too many times to mention now with all the chassis mods I've carried out over the years

Subaru's are set up from the factory with understeer, so get a full geometry set up carried out to fast road or motorsport settings & the difference will amaze you.

As 53WRX says, make sure you go to a specialist who understands what they are doing & can use the equipement properly otherwise it will be a waste of money.

At some point in the speed stakes your car WILL understeer, and no amount of geometry correction will solve this. As long as you are aware of this then you can gauge the other options in perspective.

Is it just this roundabout do you think...? Yeah I'm giving you an excuse to go out and drive fast round other roundabouts...just to test you understand
Could be the road surface if it is. Even though it may look identical from the driver's seat it may be completely different on the surface. It may even be laid a different way, inducing understeer. It may be even be slightly cambered too, who knows. So many things can affect your car's handling.

Just trying to save you rushing out and spending your hard earned unnecessarily.

I totally understand what you mean but this seems to happen on most round abouts. I think the car has an issue which hopefully will be addressed once Mocom get hold of it. I dont want to rush out and have a spend up...yet but i dont think it can hurt to get the geomentry sorted . I think after that has been sorted then i can have a look at stage two...and new tyres??

Yeah it's not going to hurt to get the geomety checked out.

I have a "fast road" setup on mine and that made a hell of a difference.

They just called and said they could do it today, i am looking forward to it now. You say you have fast road settings?? how many different settings do they do?? Would you suggest the fast road settings would be the best for my car or anything else??

Thanks for all your help on this one.

Just tell Zak & Luke (Mocom) what you don't like about the steering and he'll advise you want can be done to fix it via the geometery

I had mine done at GreenwoodRacing down in Surrey, so I'm not sure what Mocom do exactly. I'm guessing "fast road" is a fairly generic term, but everyone will do a different flavour. Any place worth their salt will find out what you use the car for, and how you want to drive it before recommending geometry settings.

For example, most people benefit from a bit more camber (negative), but if you do a lot of motorway driving having too much can eat your tyres fairly quickly, without giving you much of the benefit.
If you are ONLY going to drive round and round that roundabout, as another (extreme) example, you could jack up the left hand side of the car and l-e-a-n into the roundabout. That would certainly cure your understeer, but would make it impossible to drive anywhere else. Horses for courses really is what I'm saying. No two geometry settings in theory should be the same.

I dont want to knock out the tyres too quickly for sure, i just want to make it grip a little better at the front end. I dont want race settings i want it to handle a little better and drive the way it should do. I am looing forward to getting it done now. I will have a full report later on once its done.

...and after you've been round that roundabout a few times I'm guessing

Good luck

presuming they are REO70's then yes, they are a bloody brilliant tyre

i've had 2 geometry setups with Mocom, the 2nd when it was lowered i asked for a slightly more agressive setup. think it's now a bit between fast road and track setting and the **** can be a bit twitchy, but it'll still understeer if i go into a r/bout too quickly.

you'll find the car alot better after a proper set up, but i'd guess you've been going into the r/bout too fast and getting too much power down too quickly??

or you might be a driving god and all 4 of your wheels were facing in different directions. that'll do it aswell!

You don't list any mods to the suspension, my advice would be to fit a Whiteline adjustable rear anti-roll bar with suitable drop-links.

This keeps the rear of the car level during cornering, loading the outer wheel to the point were oversteer is available on demand, this also allows the front tyres to do more work in turning the car into a corner.

IMHO

P.S. Beware of worn 070's in very wet, or wintry conditions !

P.P.S. I know a man who can sort you a new set for £280 delivered

I have a buddy that has offered the same price to be honest on the tyre,s but thanks anyway. I do like the look of the Vredstein's if the truth be told. Anyway , had the geometry sorted and it seems to have cured the problem's. He reckoned the wheels were shocking and there was no wonder that i had massive under steer. However ....now its a different car . Its made a great car even better. Zak sorted it right out, Happy is not the word. What a top company and and top bloke.

Thanks for the advise, i am one happy man now!!!

Its has transformed the car if i am honest, its like it has more power....of course it hasn't but it drives like it has. It feels more like it wants to go round corners. I think its the first mod anybody ( like myself that's new ish to all this ) should do. The down side is now Zak has told me any number of things i can now add to the car....more money. I am also told how good track days are.....o well there goes next years holiday .

All in all a great help.

Thanks again
