Question Slighly damaged 03 STI - SELL IT OR STRIP IT?!

Hi Guys

I need some opinions and views on a car I have which is damaged.

Basically I owned a 03 STI Type UK last year and sadly had an accident in it after owning it for just 2 weeks! It wasnt my fault and the insurance company dealt with it.

Since then I have bought a new scooby but I was informed that the old car is still mine and I was wondering if I should fix it and sell it or strip it for parts??

The accident was caused as I was travelling down a dual carriageway approaching traffic lights and a stupid woman on the other side was waiting to turn right across my path, she thought it was her right of way and pulled out straight in front of me causing me to collide with her passenger side.

The damage is mainly cosmetic, it has front end damage and the only internal part busted is the radiator. Everything else is untouched.

The car has only done 18,000miles!!! The engine and gearbox is mint, as well as the interior. In fact everything on the car including internals is mint except for the front end and radiator.

Before the crash it was running 350bhp at 1.5bar, so should I do it up and sell it or strip it for parts??

The insurance company severely underpaid me so Im looking to make as much money as I can from this. Its so annoying when you lose out for something which isn't your fault!!

If you have any questions please PM me.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Pictures of the damage would allow people to give a better idea to begin with, without a proper inspection it's hard to give a real term figure.

03 STI (Blobeye) they sell for around £10-£12k.

Front end damage to repair maybe £2k-£3k worse case depending on damage.

Then as it's been in a crunch you'd maybe get £9k on a sell on so really if your stripping you need to ask yourself will you get £6k from stripping it down? probably not and all the effort involved.

Best bet is to either repair and sell on or if you've another car and just want to recover money sounds like your best option is to sell it for maybe £6k now as damage / repairable

I'd be amazed if anyone sold an 03 STI for £12k due to the current value of performance cars.

I got £12k for my 05 STI with PPP, spring kit, 18" Alloys. OK I priced it to sell, which it did, but for an 03 STI, you'll be lucky to get £10k.

Saw an 03 STI at a Dealers for £10,750.

I agree with this, Scooby prices are down at the moment, I reckon you will be lucky to £7-8 K at most once repaired........best bet sell to some for them to repair, you got your new car try and get at least 4k for it as it is..

P.S Don't forget i want the grill.........

The car is not written off and is not Cat D or C or anything like that.

Remember though. Others may well be £10k or there abouts, but are they selling?

First question any buyer is going to ask is "Has it been in an accident?"

Price it to sell, and it will do. Price it to what you/others want it to be worth, and prepare to wait, and wait, and wait.

Very true, theres no point being greedy. Just want whats its worth and thats it. The whole claim was a nightmare and I was cheated out of so much so I would prefer to get more then less.

But as I said being greedy doesn't get you anywhere...

How can the insurance "underpay" you when its not written off, surely they would have just paid to have the car fixed at a bodyshop?

What do you mean by "the insurance company seriously underpaid you"?

Did they not base it on the amount of damage done to your car and for it to be repaired?

Thats stealing insurance companies for you, charge you the earth for cover, then when it comes to pay time they dont give you anything, your better off going 3 party only and banking them money for a rainy day

Yep I was wondering the same thing...the storage wouldnt release the car, insurance took the p*ss and the solicitors were crap too. Serves me right for going through a private accident claims company.

I was lucky the police officer was on my side and did a whole report for me which proved my innocence.

So after 18 months of pure grief, here I am...

That looks a very easy repair to me to good to split especially if it wasn't written off. If you can do it yourself (or pay somebody to do it) get it done then sell it on or sell it as is am sure it will sell no problem as long as you don’t want over the top for it.
Hard to see how you can be out of pocket if they paid something out and gave you the car (unless its the depreciation of the car)

By the time you add up all the parts required, and the labour, paint etc., that is not going to be a particularly cheap repair. The car is too good to break though. Try to sell as-is for someone else to repair.
I'm a bit confused that you say the car is not a 'write off' and yet the insurance paid out on it? What did they pay you, the cost of repair? Why didn't you have it repaired by the insurance co. if they didn't write it off? Are you sure its not a Cat D (can take a while to appear on VCar).

Yep I'm just looking to get rid of it as is.

Ok Id have to write an essay to explain what went on during the claim, basically I lost out as I was advised to go though a private accident claims company. It's the first accident I've had and a so-called friend of mine who owned the company said he would help me sort it all out and said I would come out at the better end.

However It turned into the biggest nightmare of my life.

The car had been in storage for all this time and the hire car costs were mounting up too to a hefty amount, at the end of it all I was told as I had a contract with the claims company I was liable for the cost as it was too much of a large amount for the insurance company.

They helped with some of it, but I got left with a hefty bill and a useless car!
I dont have time to fix it or strip it although I considered it.

What is fair about that???!!!!

Sounds like you were given some pretty sh*t advice. Hindsight is a wounderful thing. I can only imagine your "Friend" promised you, you could be in-line for a compensation payout. Don't want to jump to conclusions, but greed seams to be the main problem here. If you'd just left the incident to the insurance company in the first place, I'm sure it would have been sorted within weeks.

People see/hear the compensation word, and greed takes over.

It wasnt even about the compensation, I didnt get any, and greed is definately not the factor.

I wish it was greed now and maybe if that was all on my mind I would have been better off.

It was just trusting a 'friend' that got me.

Well life is a lesson and you learn from mistakes.

From the very rough look at the pictures, it will need, Bumper, wings, Lights, front slam panel, labour & paint, + any other damage that may have been caused that can not been seen from the photos. Put an advert in Autotrader/pistonheads as damaged and at £6.5k ono and see what happens I would be sure it would go, make sure you have the V5 and any relevant paperwork to hand before the sale.
