young scooby drivers
how come there are so many young scooby drivers lately? (not saying its a bad thing) there are a lot of guys asking insurance advice in the insurance section. is this a result of the price crash on performance cars? me and nearly all my mates never touched performance cars till after 25 as we would never pay over a grand for insurance.

I'm 32 with over 10yrs no claims and it is only until now that I have considered myself to be in a suitable position to own an impreza wrx. Couldn't justify the ridiculous insurance premiums during my early 20s but then I've had a mortgage and 2 kids to finance since my mid 20s. Suppose I would've if I could've cos my wrx has certainly put the pleasure back into driving for me. I guess eveyone has their own circumstances but agreed I would like to know how the young uns can justify or even afford over a grand for the insurance. Just shows trends definitely change through generations.

I think there have been young people driving fast cars forever. As you say Jonnys3, its down to personal circumstances.
Some have rich families, some live at home so 1g insurance is a months pay, and can be saved up quickly if you dont have any major expenses like mortgage / rent.
There are also young professionals such as myself which are on very high wages given the age, and see the price as a necessity given the choice of car.
Horses for courses!
The recent economic activity hasn't helped car residuals, so for not too much money you can pickup alot of car. Good for buyers i guess.

Definitely agree with you there cos it's not just the mortgage that'll cripple you, it's all the extras that come with owning a house like council tax, water rates, gas, electric, TV, Sky, broadband etc. Like I said in my previous post if I could've owned a scooby earlier I would've done but it's all down to personal circumstances, and now I've got kids I've certainly come to appreciate how important it is to enjoy yourself in life as you only get one chance at it so why not be happy! I say have a scooby and enjoy it if you're able to - whatever your age.

For the first time in my 15 years driving I have actually paid the least I have for years and probably ever have paid for insurance.
I'm now 34 and drive a 2006 Sti, I renewed in April for £550 fc. If my memory serves me correctly, thats less than I paid for my Mk1 xr2 when I was 17. I have always paid high premiums as I love cars and I hold onto my no claims discount very tightly.
I was chatting to a friend recently who was telling me how much his 18 yr old son paid for his 1.6 Astra, I almost fell of my chair..... for once, getting older has it advantages.

Funnily enough the Scooby was the 1st car that i owned to be less than 1k in insurance.
I had no proof of no claims when i came back from Germany, only had 1 years no claims (by the time i bought the car) and was only just 23.
Now 4 years no claims later and its only £700 with mods declared.

I guess that a lot of them have decent jobs or live with their parents. Good luck to them.
I think I'd rather not have a scooby than live with my parents though.
Fortunately, I'm 33 so it doesn't matter.

28. mortgage, and an ver4 sti wagon @£1000 approx insurance for the past 2 years.
Owned an MR2 Turbo for 2 years before the impreza and the insurance was the same..even though I got rid of it 2 years ago! Guessing the impreza is more to insure than an MR2 Turbo!
Have to agree with above...its not the mortgage that kills you....its the other necessities...water, gas, electric, and council tax...although I do wonder where my council tax money goes!!

im 19 with a uk turbo...insurance wouldnt touch me on an import but paying 2200 third party fire and theft.
subaru's seem so cheap to buy now so a lil more money to help with insurance.
i live at home with my missus with a fairly good wage coming in and to be honest im struggling to run it and buy stuff for it but thought might aswell enjoy it while im young and still can i suppose

I bought mine as my first car for 5000 at 17. 1999 UK Turbo
I always wanted one so I paid the 3 grand insurance. Looking back it was rediculous really, but hey it's better to have an empty pocket than a full grave.
Tim.

Edit - By the way had the mortgage 2yrs, and just got married - hence no mod thus far

My first performance car was a mk1 Golf GTi; cost me £1200 to insure it for the first year! Car only cost £1400!
Young uns will always drive fast cars & I guess an oldish Scoob is within their reach now. The rich ones can afford a new one of course
TX.

I remember those days well - my first car at 17 was an XR2i and it was nearly £800 3rd party fire and theft - much more than the scooby or anything else I've ever had to insure - will never consider anything but fully comp though now.

19 and pay just over 2K. i say if you can then why not.
i don't like the image which they have/ are obtaining but as much as i hate to admit it, its due to young people such as myself who are buying them.
