Probably not far off the expected retail price TBH. Shoule be able to get it cheaper, but I can't help on where. Autoclimate are one of the trade suppliers in the UK...but are trade only, so not much help.
...Last time I had to source a new compressor at a decent price (Toyota - still a Denso unit), I had to ship it from Australia
If the current compressor has failed, it will have contmainated the system downstream of the compressor, and will require flushing to remove the debris. Replacement of the dryer cartridge/desiccant insert. Cleaning of any filter screans, possible replacement of the orifice tube and condensor (if it can't be properly flushed). Then fully dried of residual flush and correct amount of oil added. Otherwise the new compressor will not last very long (as noted on some Audi forums when a spate of A3s suffered repeated failures - the dealers weren't flushing the systems out properly).
