has anyone had any dealings with any engine warming equipment to help look after the engine on their cars?

They use stuff like that in places where it gets really cold, e.g. Canada. You plug you car in overnight so it doesn't freeze solid and is nice and warm when you come to use it in the morning.

Overkill for this country I would say, just warm the engine up gently and you're sorted.
