A mate has just bought a newage JDM STI.

On his way home (250 miles) from buying it.....oil began spurting down the nearside doors

After I removed the undertray I can see a prominent drip from a Black plastic cover/plate. (My classic has this same cover)

On looking from above (engine bay) this shiney Black cover is on the left hand side of the battery and infront of the oil filler cap neck. The cover is fixed with 4 bolts and the leak is definitely coming from inside this Black cover/box.

WTF is in there and what could have gone to cause a leak?

Thanks

That's the mate and car

I think it could be the timing belt cover and possibly the oil pump in there also.

gutted!

i just had a quick look under my bonnet and it seems to be the cover that has the pullys in it, i had a problem with mine when i first got it, loud knocking from inside that cover, took it back to the garage and it had to have new pullys, tensioners and belts fitted. the knocking went and it cost them £800 to fix.

if you take the cover off you wont see much bar pullys and a belt

Like Mart360 says it contains the oil pump under there. Sounds suspiciously like the crankshaft oil seal under there may be leaking.

Just had to replace mine today as oil was p*ssing out from it last night. Went to fit a new timing/cam belt, fitted it ok then started it without the covers on, and oil came outfrom around the crank pulley. Turned out the seal was gone, and the movement of fitting a new belt must have finally dislodged the seal.
