Default Need advice regarding trading a car in

Hi,

I need a bit of advice regarding trading my car in.

Basically I've got a 2005 55 plate WRX with full service history and 19,000 miles on the clock. The car I'm looking at is a 2006 56 plate WRX Sti PPP with 18,000 miles on the clock. The car is at a main dealer for £18,995. I've looked in the price guides and my cars trade in value is circa £10-11k. I've seen comparable cars at main dealers for about £12-12.5k.

Theoretically speaking if I get £10.5k for my car that leaves me with roughly £8.5k to find.

In my mind this seems a bit on the steep side. Is a year younger Sti really worth so much more? Or is it a case of the dealer trying to make lots of money? I feel that in this current credit crunch climate that there must be some room to bring that price tag of £18,995 down a bit.

Thanks in advance

If you can sell your car private I am sure you will gain atleast £1k above what the dealer will offer in px. With cash in your pocket you are in the driving seat and will be able to negotiate that £19k down by upto £1k or an extra yr's warranty.

Thems are the dealers ways to make money. See what price they'll give you without p/ex, just trade in and check the prices of what yours will realistically sell for and what the new sti costs from a private seller.

Then you can ask yourself whether the increased price you're paying is worth the hastle-less sale and purchase.

That is just taking the pi** in the current market. Keep an eye here and on pistonheads, you bound to find a much better bargain!

£19,000 does seem very steep for a 56 reg STI, even one with PPP - and they can't even claim it's down to low mileage. I would have thought somewhere around £16,500 is a more realistic figure, maybe even less given the dire market conditions at present for cars of this type.

If possible, you're better off buying privately. You already have an Impreza, so you know the car well and should feel more confident as a result. I bought my second STI privately, travelling all the way to London for it, and it was well worth it.

Trade in is a fairly "easy" way to get rid of a car these days though isn't it. My car is for sale & I'm prepared to wait for as long as it takes (could be a long time ) for the reasons you mention below. Not everyone has that luxury though ...

My advice to the OP is to negotiate hard for his car & the new one as it is a buyers market.

TX.

PS

The OP is going WRX to STi PPP which is a substantial step up in my book, although perhaps not £8k (refer to negotiations above ).

If I were you I'd sell your car privetly. Then you could buy my 2005 STI PPP with Prodrive Spring kit and Prodrive PFF7 alloys for the bargain price of £12,500. Car has 31,750 miles on it.

Are there many buyers for £10-12k WRXs? Doubt it. Wrong car in the wrong price bracket these days given the running costs. Similarly the dealer has bu88er all chance of getting £19k for his STI. If you want more for your car then tell him. Say, I want to pay £x plus my car and let him sweat. He'll call back.

FWIW I think £10.5k is a great price for your car. £19k for the STI is however, ridiculous.

A mate of mine paid £16.5k for a 7k miles 07(56) STi PPP from a main dealer last year, before the 'credit crunch' and tax changes. 8 months on and the current economic state of play I'd be thinking of £14.5k tops for the same car.

Agreeing with the £10,000 to £11,000 price range for yours thats about the average price you'd get trading it in.

When you go to trade in, say I've got £5,000 in my back pocket which I'm willing to give right here right now including my Impreza as a p/x for the STi PPP which you've got for £19,000.

They'll stat barganing with you, going from £16,000 to £18,000 bring him down to £17,000 and haggle. He'll try for £17,750 then agree with a full tank of juice, mud flaps and mats. Then all being well you should have a deal.

Prices we're just an example by the way, choose something that's realistic but suits you at the same time.

Otherwise buy and sell privatly, you would get more selling it that way and would buy cheaper leaving more in your pocket for mods.
