Smile Newbee - Which model

Hi

Thinking about getting a Subaru Impreza, currently have a Primera SRI, been nagging the other half for years

Can't be too exspensive, was looking around the £2000 mark really,

What should i be looking at, and roughly how much would insurance be.

Thanks in advance

For 2k i wouldn't bother, it will be a shed which will cost you ££££'s when it breaks.
Insurance will vary depending on age, location, ncb etc.
Factor in the price of fuel and you will be left

Sounds pretty much spot on

For a classic shape (View my scooby) around £5000 ish.

You can get lucky with lower prices but around the 60-80k mileage mark is a good start.

Hiope it helps!

As said above. £2k will buy you a shed.

If you want an Impreza, either save up for a while or take out a loan.

If you can stretch your budget to around £3-3.5k then you can probably find a decent my95-96 UK Turbo with about 80k.

Even the most pro-Subaru nutcase in the most rose tinted glasses wouldn't recommend a £2000 Scooby. Frankly rather than throw your money away (which is what you would be doing) I suggest you take your two grand and buy shares in something like Persimmon Homes or Barclays Bank. Both have taken a serious kicking over the last year, but are fundamentally sound companies. Wait for the recession/credit crunch/housing slump to end and watch your money multiply. You'll then be able to afford something that isn't going to be a bigger money pit than you can possibly imagine.

How about a turbo lookey-likey - plenty on Pistonheads and if you drive like me then no one will ever know you're missing a blower
If not, there seem to be some reasonable wagons - less likely to be tinkered with (more likely had sheep carried about in them)

IMHO no

Scoobs are all about turbo charging. Don't get me wrong the Sports are good cars but a rather wheezy 2.0L normally aspirated engine in a heavy car with four wheel drive running gear does not make for high performance. You'd be better off spending your 2k on some sort of hot hatch or stick with the Primera for now and save some cash for a proper Scoob.

Purchase cost is just the beginning with them though, services are every 7.5k miles or six months and don't come cheap unless you're a competent DIY mechanic. They go through tyres (£400 a set), brake pads, etc. at a reasonable rate. Drink fuel, typically 20 mpg on a mix of urban and motorway driving, and prefer super/V-Power. Finally insurance, depending on age, location etc. you'll be looking at anything between £400 - £1500 for an unmodified car, more with mods.

2k WILL get you a half decent early wrx/uk 2000 turbo, there are plenty about and lots of people are sellling due to the cost of fuel/cost of living etc,

but the running costs would be similar to a 20k car, if you can afford the running costs then I would say go for it, but if it might be an issue then I'd look at something else

Thanks guys

Loads of help (and lots to think about)

I'm leaning towards a Impreza Sport, as it will be cheaper on insurance, maybe when the kids leave home, i'll beable to afford a REAL subaru Impreza

Thanks

Will be Flogging my scooby in a few months, will only be after around £2k for that. Its mint inside... not a spot of rust under, and the engines in perfect working order..

It would be a good by for 2k, the body need sa litle tidying with a few car park dings and scratches..

Its true there are some sheds out there, but an early classic in good nic could be had for £2k easy!
