Default smaller number plate

I'm looking at getting a number plate without the huge gaps that mine has either side of the plate - It's probably standard but it just looks really wide. Does anyone know where to get a 3/4 size one from? If not, is it easy enough to trim down a standard size one with a stanley knife?

Are the 3/4 sized plates legal too?

Thanks, yeah I'm not sure which ones are legal and which aren't but I'd be happy with either a square one or one which isn't as wide as the one I've got. I used to have a square plate on my Ford Probe and I never got stopped once by the police.

Thanks for the link too mate, the configurator is good on it.

I just measured the plate I have and it's 20 1/2 " x 4 1/2" but the annoying thing is there's a gap of about 3" between the first and last letters on the plate and the edge of the plate. I measured other people's number plates and mine seems to be worse than theirs.

Thanks for the link. I ended up buying one in the end from the Myshowplates link. I chose one which probably won't stand out and hopefully the police won't notice . It's 16" by 4 1/2 ".

As the Plod's primary crime detection device is now ANPR, they are becoming very vigilant about the plate being correctly formatted so the system can read it easily. Mine was 90% size with no border, logo or anything and it was hard to tell until sat side-by-side, and even then it wasn't glaringly obvious.

That plate's similar to the one I've got. Have you got caught yet with that one?

Can you get points on your license?

Never got a tug in 3 years of Scooby ownership. Don't have it any more

I don't think they can issue points, just a £30 FPN. If you have a private plate they can have the DVLA withdraw the plate after repeated infractions.

I decided to go for it and if I get stopped I will learn my lesson . According to the DVLA regulations I should've got stopped for my square plate on my last Ford Probe but I never got stopped and also went through a couple of MOTS!

I did take a relatively wimpish route though and bought one that is the correct depth (4 1/2 " ) but the width is 16" instead of 20 1/2 ". Here are the results before and after - with the digits blanked off :-) .....

I just cut the sides off mine with a wood saw and then sanded the edges smooth.

Think there is a picture in VMS <---------

Thanks, I am pleased with the difference. The old number plate kept bugging me. I have kept it just in case I do have to change it back one day :-S

The square one would look great! I'd go for it.

Here is the plate I used to have...

i had this on my old car

and this is on my current one

luckily never had any problems with either and that's going back about 5 years. had plenty of looks from plod and they've had to come off at MOT time, but touch wood, no hassle.
i was always told as long as your rear plate is std at you're not trying to alter the lettering to make it read something else you should be ok. granted this might not be the case with so many front reading cameras in force now.
