97My is single coil pack not plug top coil (aka 'coil packs' - er pack of one!) so more reliable in that respect.
97MY is straight not angled intercooler, all round more efficent and better flow.
97MY ECU is not chippable or mappable, so major mods will need a new ECU such as link/Apexi FC.
97MY is the first low friction (aka slipper style) pistons and more prone to piston slap, so make sure you listen to one start fully cold!

I have a MY97 V3 STI and can’t fault it
Look around until you find a good one, loads around at the moment at daft prices, make sure you know it’s had oil changes at regular intervals with good quality oil and ask owner what fuel he uses. If he doesn't say Optimax or similar walk away.
Mine had a bottle of Motul 15w/50 in the boot and a bottle of octane booster in the glove box which is a good sign
Check for the usual things, engine/transition noises and anything else you normally would when buying a car.
When I was looking almost all had leaky cam cover gaskets which stink when you pull over but easily fixed and a good bargaining tool to get some money off.
Mine did suffer from piston slap when the weather was cold but now is a bit warmer it’s gone . Not really a problem as long as you warm it up before giving it some.

Only main prob with mine is it has a bit of piston slap.
Pain in the **** cos it was started from cold when i went to look at it, could not hear any piston slap at all but noticed it once i got up the road(500 miles later).
But it still runs good so cant complain.
