It says none residents require one but does that mean none resident of sardinia or none EU resident still waiting for a reply from Hertz

Wikipedia says Within the European Union, an EU-format license of one member state is recognised in all other member states without the need for an IDP. so maybe I don't need one after all!

I've certainly driven all across Europe, the US, and the Gulf without one. Never been to Sardinia though.

Cant say if I was within the law either TBH!!!

appears to be slightly more complicated if you have an old style paper licence you need a IDP think you are ok with new plastic ones

I have been there for the rally since 2004. I didn't go this year.
I had a paper license until Jan 2007, when I got a plastic one to go with points.
Have driven in Finland & Sweden without IDP as well.
I hope this helps.

Attached is the link from The AA.
It says that an IDP is needed in Italy, with (F)

F = All valid UK driving licences should be accepted.
Acceptance of driving licences that are not of the European Communities model cannot be guaranteed.

International Driving Permit : IDP Requirements by Country - The AA

I would say that as long as you have a pink paper or plastic it will be fine.

F – All valid UK driving licences should be accepted. Acceptance of driving licences that are not of the European Communities model cannot be guaranteed therefore drivers may wish to voluntarily update them before travelling abroad, if time permits. Application for D1 (in Northern Ireland DL1) is available from most Post Offices. Alternatively, older licences may be accompanied by an IDP.

Well mine is an old paper one but I will probably risk it
