Thumbs down check engine light?

hey folks, i just bought a 1993 wrx import, the check engine light came on and my brother said to disconnect the battery terminals for half an hour, so i done that and it reset everything so was all sound! now its come back on so i was wondering if anybody could help. the only other thing ive noticed is that the fan is always going with the check engine lite, thanks.

Not sure on the early WRX but check under the driver side dash for a pair of black and a pair of green connectors.

If you connect the black and then power the ignition on the ECU will flash the CEL on and off. long flash = 10 short= 1

That gives you the error code.

If the green are connected it will pulse the boost solenoid and kick the fan on.

Disconnecting the battery resets to default so when the ecu detects the sensor is at fault the CEL will come on again.

As STI said the classics have connectors so you can read the codes yourself but can be a bugger to find as normally they are tapped up.

Coolant temp sensor may be at fault from your description.
