Anyone else had problems with the 01 ally bonnet denting?
#1
Just wondering as I have noticed that there are now at least two small but deep dents and scratches on the front edge of my aluminum bonnet (WR Blue MY01).
I have not been on a track day and cant remember anything hitting the front of my car?
The dents look like they have been caused by stones. Surely the bonnet should be able to take a small stone hitting it even if the paintwork can't.
Nathan..

True story - in 1972 (honest!!!) I worked for a guy that was an Aston specialist, and a very trick panelbeater.
We had a very nice DB5 in - all alloy panels over tubular spaceframe ("superleggera" coachwork) - unfortunately the owner had forgotten to fasten the bonnet bungee clips on it and the bonnet lifted at speed, and wrapped it self across the roof. The centre to rear of the bonnet was flush with the wings, but the front had a foot gap between it and the grille!!!!!
He spent about a week beating it by hand and straightened it out totally, you would never know the bonnet had even a dent in it. Guess what - a few weeks later, the owner did exactly the same again
For the last 30 years therefore, I have been *very* careful with ally panels LOL

Day 2 of Scoob ownership I checked the levels and tried to close the bonnet. It didn't shut so....
I pushed down in the middle, like I've done before on all my rep mobiles and hot hatches. Result. I now have a dent in the middle of the bonnet. Silly me I thought.
So far no other dents, but then I'm a very careful driver (!) (Actually the missus drives the car more than me)
Am competemplating a Dentmaster job, but I'm very wary 'cos it's in the middle on a curve and I'm not sure I'd trust them with my pride and joy.

Yep, bonnet closing procedure for a MY01 is hold it about a foot up, then drop it......the dent in yours may be on top of a double skinned area, which will be difficult to get out - a sucker may be be necessary if it can't be reached from behind.. I did hear that Dentmaster don't do bonnets, but don't know if that is true....you may have to find an old fashioned panelbeater who is skilled in working with ally.

Another word of advice - if you are working in the engine bay, make sure you clear all the tools away before you drop the bonnet, otherwise you will be left with a molehill in your bonnet....

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like I'll just have to touch up the massive stone chip and when I come to sell the car consider a re-spray.
Dave there is nothing worse than when your car goes in for service and when you go to collect it they hand you a spanner and say I found that in the bottom of your air box.
Nathan..

A golf trolley fell on my ali bonnet from the top shelf in my garage, bounced 3 times causing £395 damage to my beloved MY01WRX. No-one was near the car when it happened, and the garage door was shut.
My insurance exceess is £350, so better just to cough up and get on with it, which I did. they made a top job of the repair though.

Completely relate to Nigel H's woeful tale of attempting to close the bonnet just like I always had with the old GTi. Luckily this was in the showroom, & the salesman stopped me. If I hadn't been so nosey under the bonnet, & not been so cautiuos in dropping the bonnet so that it would need another push, I would definitely have had a dent by now.

No dents. But when i park the car @ my parents there is some cat who knows about turbo's. Most of the time there are sandy little catfeet on my hood, the little ******* knows his way, next to the intake, above the turbo. The result being hunderds of very small scratches... i guess i can wax 'm out but maybe i should start by putting some lion**** on the intercooler... that scares them i'm told.
