WRX 04 - HELP! How many miles to a tank????
Hi all,
Picked up my scooby a week and a half ago and filled the tank with Optimax. I have been driving it reasonably sensibly with a few bursts but not thrashing it about. Journeys have ranged from 5 miles to 50 miles....
... my problem.... i have done 190 miles to a full tank of petrol (£65)!!!
Now, i knew scoobys were pricey to run but i still think this is a bit much?
What does yours do?
P.s. its due a service too.... and tyres are fully inflated....

Average about 240-260 but have had as much as 310ish and as little as 220, but as Ive just picked up my 3rd set of 3 points in 5 yrs I expect my mpg to be on the slightly higher side for a little while.

190 from £65 is a bit on the low side from a WRX, you must be giving it a fair amount of poke. I average about 250 from the £50 of VPower i normally put in on my WRX PPP (i never let it run down too low, i have a suspicion my fuel light doesn't work).

Could it be that its an import (originally from Malta)? I know the services are 6k apart as opposed to 10k on the UK models for some reason?

Hello
I used to have an MY97 uk turbo with quite extensive modifications, large turbo, Apexi ECU, 550cc injectors etc etc, i was getting about 250 to a tank average.
Now got an S4 4.2 V8, which, believe it or not is better on fuel! Same driving style as well
Cheers

190 miles for a tank (50L - full to light) is terrible. PPP should improve that. I'm running a 390bhp STi and i get around 250-270 for a tank.

Just measured my fuel consumption for an MY00 classic and managed 31mpg on a run. Around 245 miles IIRC, and didn't use a full tank. Got a few mods (sports cat, Green filter, decat centre and 3.5" BB) plus remap so it's up to 250+ BHP.

The way I work out my mpg is that I always fill to the top (a few clicks before I give in), reset the mileometer, then when I hit the line for the last quarter that is about 45litres used which is about 10 gallon, so you just move the decimal back a place (eg. 215.3miles = 21.53mpg). I try to fill up at this point because I don't like it running low. The light comes on with 50litres gone so I know I have a maximum 10litres (or 2 gallons left) = 40miles max. Good to know this for emergencies (ie. no shell garage in sight).
My 05 WRX PPP does about 21mpg but my trips are short. Before PPP I got around 24mpg for the same runs. Motorway journeys get me up to 26/7 mpg but no better.
Edited to add: Maybe the car is not right for you if you are going to spend most of your time staying under 3k rpm to save fuel. It wont make a great deal of difference anyway (maybe £5 per fill up) and you'll spoil the ownership experience. Just drive to the limits of the road at the time - if you are in traffic, use the gears to stay off boost as you are going nowhere, then open the taps when you get the opportunity. I wouldn't conciously be thinking of staying under 3k rpm all the time though as you'll go barmy!

Filled up this morning on 278 miles and thats just as it touches the red on the decal. I never let it get to the light coming on (in fact I dont even know what colour the light is) as someone once told me it drags all the sh*t from the bottom of your tank through the engine. I dont know if thats true, but I'm happy staying on the safe side, whether it is or not.
And also thats on standard unleaded. I used to get another 30-35 miles a tank on v-power, but its about £1.25 round my way now and I think thats highway robbery.

As far as telling the wife....definitely tell her to stay below 3k rpm or better still, make her drive something else/get the bus/taxi, etc
