Best place for them, according to "Which?" is on proper racks on the roof.

Most secure, easily locked in place, and least wind resistance, strangely enough.

Plus, you can still get stuff in and out of the boot.

I have FOUR on top of a classic, regularly, using OE Scoob roofbars, and THREE cheapo French upright carriers, plus ONE "wheel out" upright carrier.

The cheapy ones are fine so long as you zip-tie the front wheels from both sides to the strut holding the down tube, to stop the wheel/handlebars shaking about.

The other type is lighter and VERY rigid, but you need to accomodate the wheel somewhere: mine has been in the boot, in the car, in a caravan, and zip-tied to the frame.

Been looking into this myself. You would be better with one that fits onto a tow bar if you're wanting to carry 3 bikes.

Something like this.
THULE PRO 903 EUROCLASSIC BIKE CYCLE CARRIER RACK 9901 on eBay, also Car Racks, Cycling Accessories, Cycling, Sporting Goods (end time 30-May-08 16:26:55 BST)

But with those, second to worst fuel economy, and often you can't get into the boot without removing the rack.

Also, vibrating bikes can cause damage to the rear of the car and to each other. Better to have them completely separated.

This is what I got for mine, THULE aero roof bars, 750 fitting kit and the pro bike carrier (think its called the 951 but not sure). Had 2 bikes on it so far, very easy to fit, very light and pretty stable. Can have up to 4 bike racks on it, doesn't damage any paint work and even though it looks difficult, its really easy to get the bikes on and off the roof. I have locks on everything including the roof bars and the racks.........

If you're interested, I have two standard Thule roof bars with foot packs to fit a classic and two Thule Tour 510 bike carriers for sale in good condition, only been used a couple of times. Lock in place and rock solid whilst in use, highly recommended..... open to sensible offers, cost over £200 new.

Classic or newage?

If newage I've got genuine Subaru roof bars up for grabs if you're interested
