Default Green air filter element (lugs)

I have just fitted a Green airfilter into my RB5.

After fitting the airfilter I then read the small instructions that were supplied.
The instructions suggest that the small rubber lugs that are fitted may need to be cut off for some vehicles.

Is there a need, and what vehicles are thay refering to?

I just shoved it in. Perhaps I was too heavy handed?
