Road tax question: JDM Import
My road tax expires at end of August and I just want to ask if anyone knows what I can expect to pay. Yes, I've looked at the Parkers calculator and VED website, but I'm still not sure where I stand because my Scooby (very early JDM Bugeye WRX) is an import that doesn't seem to fall clearly into any category.
The V5C states in Special Notes "declared manufactured in 2000", which is repeated in Part 10 (new Keeper supplement). I am 99.9% sure that this is correct, since the GDA chassis number is relatively low and would seem to indicate a fourth quarter year 2000 build date. It was then imported in 2003, registered here in August 2003 (as stated on V5C) and given a retrospective "X......" registration plate which reflects the build date.
There is no CO2 emissions data included on the V5C.
For what it's worth the 2007-2008 12 month tax disk was 175 quid.
So who knows what the road tax is going to cost me each year till 2010?

The link comes up with licence not due. I don't know how but it was done after the budget (the last day of march) and I walked in to the local post office with just the V5 and said "how much to tax this for the year". I was fully expecting £400 plus but they asked for £185. The car was 1st registered 01/04/2007 as a new vehicle by Prodrive and I am the 2nd owner. It's since been converted to a Group N rally car but that doesnt change the tax rate.
It will probably mean I actually pay more tax because at £185 it will stay taxed all year even when it's sat in the garage not in use. At £400+ it would only be taxed when in use on the public road and cashed in immediately afterwards.
if anybody's interested

I know it's an old thread, but here's an update if it's not already done on another thread....
Japanese Imports NOT affected by New Road Tax
2008-05-26
Hi All,
I've finally gotten some clarity on this subject. The government release below dated March 2008 states that the new Road Tax rates will not effect cars that were manufactured before July 2008. Read the statement below:
New Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Motor Tax System
06/03/08
Mr John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, today (5 March 07) clarified the position in relation to introduction of the new CO2 based motor tax system. This clarification followed the passing of amendments to the Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2008 at committee stage of the Bill today by the Dail Select Committee on the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
Minister Gormley stated that all new cars registered from 1 July 2008 will have their motor tax rate based on the CO2 emissions level. The new CO2 based system will not apply to the import of pre 2008 cars.
New cars registered between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 will initially have their motor tax charged on the basis of the existing engine size (c.c.) system. However, a low CO2 emitting new car registered between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 will have its motor tax switched to the lower CO2 based motor tax rate on first renewal of motor tax post 1 July 2008, when the new CO2 based system commences. New cars which are registered in the first 6 months of 2008 whose tax would be more under the new CO2 based system will continue to pay motor tax on the basis of engine size (c.c.).
"I am pleased to introduce this Committee Stage Amendment which will effectively allow new cars with low carbon emissions into the new emissions based motor tax system post 1 July 2008. The purpose of introducing the emissions based system in the first place was to encourage and incentivise as many people as possible to purchase 'greener cars' Today's amendment will ensure that additional car buyers will benefit from the scheme," said the Minister.

and brought here in July 2003 and no emissions data. I pay the old scheme for tax of £185 a year, which I believe is because there is no indication from import when it first was registered abroad, they use the manufactured on date to give it the appropriate plate - meaning it falls nicely into the pre-March 2001 CO2 band tax scheme and stays on the 'above or below' 1.6l scheme.
This link will give you the manufactured date SUBARU
