One of the simplest and most effective things to remember is to have two buckets: One with the warm soapy water, and one with clean water. Add soapy water to the sponge, wash an area, and then rinse the sponge in the clean water before 're-loading' the sponge in the soapy water. By the end of the wash you have a bucket of dirty water and bucket of (clean) soapy water. This ensures that the sponge is always clean when it's being used on the car, and reduces swirls and the like.

I see the word sponge mentioned above AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH !!!, get yourself a nice woolen wash mit and use the two bucket method, the mit will not harbour the grit like a sponge does

I didn't see that - obviously the terror I felt blocked out any reference to it.

NEVER use a sponge on your car.

(And get into the Car Care forum to be re-educated" )

oops, where do I get a decent 'wash mitt', and can they be cleaned if they ar dropped, or do they need to be thrown away?

btw, I've also got a Porter Cable, which I would recommend.

few websites selling them, I just popped into Halfords and bought some meguirs stuff though, the mitts are really good, about £10 like, but after you've used it, rinse out and chuck in the washer, can be used lots of times

If you drop it just rinse it in your clear water, you should be using the "2 bucket" method anyway to avoid putting dirt and grime back onto the paintwork.

Actually - the Halfords own brand lambswool mitts are very good (and IMO better than the meg's one). I had one that lasted me about 8 months before it started falling apart - the lambswool pile itself though was almost as good as the day I bought it; promptly replaced with another halfords own brand lambswool mitt! I've kept the other one but have relegated it to less critical duties

To wash - into the washing machine on a wool setting with non-bio washing liquid.
