Thumbs up wastegate ??

Not knowing that much about engines you'll have to pardon my lack of knowledge...

Am i right in saying that:- on rally cars its that lovely little sound as you lift off and change down ? if it is can you fit them to road cars ? or am i completely off the mark and now looking like a pillock ??

cheers

your car already has a wastegate fitted to the turbo as standard,i think the noise you describe is whats referred to as wastegate chatter but is actually the noise a turbo makes when it stalls.
to achieve this you need to do away with your dump valve/recirc dump valve, this is something that can be done although i think it depends what turbo you have got.

td series turbos are apparently ok running without a dv,where as vf can be weak and is not advised running without a dv.
there will be differing opinions on this subject so my advise would be speak to a mapper/specialist before doing anything.

i can see how any turbo is ok being stalled, ok some turbos will be stronger and have stronger impellers and will prob last longer being stalled but overall i am sure its not a good thing, on rally cars it does not matter because they change the turbos etc every other race or somthing. dont get me wrong the noise it makes is nice but i dont think its worth damaging your turbo.
