PPP on WRX - Too loud
#1
One of the reasons I bought a WRX was that it is very refined and quiet.
Since I have a ridiculously loud Elise already this was quite important.
I tried a PPP'ed WRX on Saturday, and although I was very impressed with the improved throttle response and massive mid range torque, I really didn't like the noisy exhaust which sounded harsh and very boomy.
Didn't seem to bad, until I got back into my car and realised how silent it is.
My question is, is it possible to get that kind of throttle response and torque without having the loud exhaust? ie. Does the PPP really have to have that exhasut, or is it mainly there to please people who wanted it to have it's voice back?

Are you sure the car didn't have a full decat, not just the rear box and decat centre as per it should have with the PPP?
It's an objective thing, but I wouldn't call my WRX loud, even with all three cats off.
The WRX is totally strangled with the cats on. You could put the OEM backbox back on, but this would also take away some of the bhp/torque/response.

I am going to get flamed for this but
My misses agreed with you said I "ruined" a "loverly" car when I got it PPP'd
I got BJ Acoustics to sound proof it
She's Happy now and I drive round with the window open

On a more serious note, the sound my WRX makes with it's SS exhaust is one of the main reasons i bought an Impreza. Sure, the Clio172, Honda R-types and many more cars handle nice, look nice and whatever but the ROAAAR from my Scoob gives me a big grin all the time... When i step the pedal my son says 'wow dad, the car is laughing!'

I AM at work - where are you?
Mark - shows how good the soundproofing is then!
PS - Mrs T-S says her WRX isn't loud enough, even with two out of three cats off......

Nah
She decided to keep it. Suits me, use hers daily and leave mine in the garage so the mileage is nice and low
Both registered 010601, Mrs T-S's = 9000 miles, mine = 4600 miles hehehe

Jza - I tried a 3 series, but you can't get a decent one for £16k (which is what my imported Scoob cost). I wouldn't find a 316 relaxing enough since it wouldn't handle and wouldn't be powerful enough fpr wasy overtaking.
A 330 would be ideal, but for £16000?
I simply found the WRX to be the most comfortable refined car which handled well and had enough power for relaxed overtaking.
I know I'm a bit odd compared to most Scooby fans because I have the Elise which is louder inside than any Impreza I know of. So I want a comfortable relaxed but crucially, capable, car. If I want excitement and noise I wouldn't even pick up the keys for the Scoob...
If the PPP's torque could be available without the noise it would be perfect for me.

Yo BT,
I can honestly say that i dont notice the engine/exhaust note on the motorway. I bought aftermarket ICE to remove the problem!!!
Dont find it annoying without the stereo off either IMHO.
It tends to go v.quiet around the 75-85mph mark anyway if you arent using the throttle!
Get the PPP and stop being a Jessie!!!

YEAH RIGHT Dave....it's more likely to be due to the fact that hers is MUCH prettier than yers.

Of course you are allowed to fit the PPP to a Euro Impreza!!
As for the warranty? Well the dealer confirmed that it would be covered after all. I was excpecting to lose it.
So is the exhaust louder simply because of one of the 'cats' being removed? (They aren't all strictly cats, only one of them is).
Sorry Jza, looks like I'm going to have to change my name to "Jessie52".. (At least when I'm not having my eardrums destroyed by the Elise anyway.)
Shame because the throttle response was much improved.

Jessie52,
The back box and i imagine the decat centre are the cause of the growl.
Still, i honestly dont think you'll find the extra noise an issue compared to the extra power
Some find the PPP excellent, others are underwhelmed. Im sure that some dealers are fitting them badly

As suggested earlier sound deadening is surely the way forward. You will lose lots of rattles, road and wind noise as well as the exhaust note. You will get a much more refined ride for the weight gain. See this for example...

Underlay under the boot "carpet" helps a heck of a lot on a MY00 and is very cheap. Remus backboxes are said to be very quiet, but I thought the Prodrive ones seemed to be some of the quietest about hence I am happy with mine. How about doing the uppipe and downpipe and putting a quiet backbox on and getting a Link ECU (if it is out yet?) You may end up with both a quicker AND a quieter car, but no warranty. I know what you mean about the noise levels - I tried a Blitz Nur Spec for an hour the other day instead of my Magnex DP/PPP exhaust system. Note it only stayed on an hour, but it did boost 1 PSI higher held boost!

Thanks for all these suggestions. Not so bothered about outright performance, but that lump of mid-range torque was very nice with the PPP.
Want a flexible high torque range rather than narrow power band.
Probably just being greedy though.

I love diesels until about 4-5000rpm, but they cannot translate the torque into power at wheels because of excessively tall gearing and lack of revs (which I suppose have to go together). Even a TD04L Scooby feels gutless top end. Diesels kind of slow down at the top end and sound horrid. But for "sensible" drivers like my wife I think she would go quicker in one than a Scooby or a big V6 petrol!
