Default Another good weekend for the 300+bhp fwd hot hatch drivers

It really makes you wonder why people bother with anything but 4wd for performance vehicles in this country.

Maybe they enjoy a challenge? Maybe they don't race their cars on public roads?

Who mentioned anything about racing on public roads?

Challenges for fwd cars in wet conditions:-

1. Counting how many seconds they can spin there front wheels before they actually move anywhere.

Can anybody think of anymore?

It was GPS confirmed 188mph and if you think I'd do that on a road in mainland UK then you're being naive.

Aren't I right in thinking that a MKV Golf GTi with 'only' 200bhp beat a new WRX round a mostly damp track?
I guess then what the FWD hatch brigade will be doing is outhandling Imprezas.................

Technically it is 4wd, the diffs operate like a normal road going car with the power going to the free spinning wheel but once it wheelspins the diff locks out and becomes full time 4wd.

No car can run full time 4wd, the petrol, tyre wear not to mention the risk of damaging the diff's at higher speeds just don't warrant it.

Subaru Basic manual transmissions have a 50/50 center differential with viscous clutch, performance models have a planetary differential with computer regulated lockup. Automatic transmission models have ~45/55 planetary with computer controlled lock up.

At least in the wet a Subaru driver won't be going to fast to have to use their hopeless brakes.

I'd bet a new FWD hot hatch with good tyres can get more grip than a 92 wrx council estate edition with nang kangs on or whatever crap you put on your cars.

The fact remains I'd sooner enjoy the challenge of drivering a powerful RWD car on cup tyres in the wet. Still, that doesn't make for good pub talk does it.

4WD was basically the original term used to describe all four wheels being driven on early Jeeps and trucks. These systems were not very advanced in that they simply put power to all four wheels, usually after an interior shift lever was moved and/or the vehicle's hubs were manually "locked" by the operator. During this period 4WD was thought of as a purely off-road utility. Today 4WD still refers to vehicles that can opt for two- or four-wheel drive. These vehicles often have a 4WD "low" and "high" setting that can be switched using an interior lever. The "low" setting provides even greater torque for pulling or climbing in an off-road environment. The "high" is useful for slippery on-road situations like packed snow or ice. 4WD also uses a locking center differential to avoid unnecessary slippage between the right and left wheels while off-road.
