Subaru Obsessive Disorder - Who is affected the most?
Now, I never really liked Subaru's.. but by pure chance I took one for a test drive and it was love
Now the thing is, this is totally normal with many people with their cars; but Subaru's seem to have this ability to move themselves out of your "car" life, and into your "real" life. I'm a little concerned though that I may have a more serious case of SOD than is normal.
I'm guessing the numerous scale models of newage Impreza SWRT cars is normal.. prehaps the one of the Lincolnshire Police bugeye STI is a bit much, but the 1/18 Scale Autoart Impreza is a must for anyone right? And the Cusco JPGTC car is just essential in a "Yo! JdM tYtE!" way.... right? And no-one would seriously turn up the chance of a limited edition Prodrive SWRT car with a real Solberg signature alongside the etching on the case, with matching cap signed by him and the rest of the crew.. right? Everyone has a Silverstreak Transformers Impreza surely?
Even I probably have to admit though, that the Richard Burns and Robert Reid signed painting of the S7 WRC car hanging above my bed is probably a bit much....
Please tell me I'm not alone!!!!

car models are a must, autoart only for me as theyre the only decent brand ive found without delving too deep :-D
SOD is a good disorder just as long as its an open appreciation towards the brand. I havent 'tuned the nuts' off my scooby, 'chaved it up' to impress the girls (or more normally scooters) at the carpark on a friday night, nor have i become so obsessed that i have started calling my manifolds 'headers' or my dump valve a 'BOV' or become obsessed that 18" wheels are necessary for ultimate grip. Just a few suspension mods, obligortory exhaust to bring out the burble, allways well serviced and looked after mechanically and constantly buying new tyres (average life is 5,000 miles).
The only time SOD becomes a problem is when it turns into SID or as i like to put it, Subaru Idiot Disorder. This basically involves the respect for the car as it being a powerful, easy to drive and accessable performance machine, without it turning into an obsessive paranoid hatred for other brands, labelling the car as a supercar killer, better then anything else on the road, a sort of pretensious defence of the car.
Dont get me wrong. I have SOD, i love my car. Its fast, its semi-practical, its ****e on fuel, its heavy, it handles well, its not a ferrari, it looks good as it is, some people hate it, some people respect it, some people are indifferent, its brakes are rubbish, its stiff and bouncy, its not an exige, but it can keep up with one, its a fast an E46 M3, but its not as good, in the pub an Mitsi EVO is quicker, in real life mines more comfortable most of the time (and in real life theyre as fast as each other as it all comes down to the driver). I could go on and on........

Tis a strange one i must admit.
I considered a new STi a few years ago but wanted a new one and couldn't afford it so bought an RX-8 instead.
18 months later and i saw my current STi at a local garage and thought i'd go and have a look and a drive - was bored of the RX-8 by this time.
It was a Saturday and the garage was quiet so had a good chinwag with the salesman Jon Crooks at Westaway Subaru and he said as there was nobody else booked to test drive it i could have it for the rest of the afternoon,so i popped it home to make sure it fit in the garage!
Since that day i have been smitten !
Have a large signed Solberg picture - 7x5's of Vatinen,Kankkunen,Auriol & Hirvonen all mounted together and framed.
Also have a Burns & Reid signed picture as well.Just seems to be an obession, never been like this before.
The loyalty factor amongst Subaru owners just seems to be unquestionable and it's good being a part of that

I'm still kicking myself that I didn't buy the Burns & Reid signed commemorative Prodrive model of the S7 WRC on the winners ramp with them standing on the bonnet that was on sale at Alex Reede (Pole Position as now is on Regents Street) last August.
For some reason I couldn't justify £100 to myself. I should have just bought it.
I own remarkably little Subaru clothing though - I've got a 2006 Season shirt pinned to my wall at work, and the previously mentioned Solberg signed cap.. but nothing I'd actually wear! I'd feel a bit of a chump.
I'd have had that steering wheel box framed and hung as well!

My confession is I have SOD as well
painted the garage door to match the greenwagon
have subaru flag flying 24/7 in the garden
clean it more then the house
have my office full of scooby gear
spend my life on subaru forums
social life is scooby meets
and i have an unhealthy Interest of getting other suabarus to come and see me .

jesus christ - you could have put a warning for the music...
You know what - I was sitting here polishing up a grill badge this afternoon I picked up from Imprezabreakers this morning.... and after seeing that video; I feel that was totally and utterly normal behavior.
