1st gear in any car isn't really designed to be selected until stationary. You can double de-clutch which should ease the shift, but I never have to select 1st gear on the move. You can almost stop in 2nd gear without stalling anyway!

Mine will go into first if I'm careful at around 15-20mph. TBH the only time I do this is in stop start traffic, however it can be useful when you want to hare it out of a tight hairpin..

Is this only when cold? Maybe once it gets warm it behaves better. I have noticed the same thing and it is only a problem when cold. There's nothing worse than trying to nurse the car out of a junction at 3mph in 2nd when it is cold (usually in the vicinity of your house so everyone knows you) - better to stop and select first before you embarass yourself

When was the last time you changed your gear oil? If it's been a while, chuck some castrol syntrax driveline in there. Will make a world of difference.

Gear oil isn't usually changed unless specified. Should be changed every 2 years though, along with the rear diff oil.
