Is wind back tool needed for brakes ????
Hi all,
Im going to change the brake pads on my 03 wrx (subaru branded callipers)
Just wanted to know if you need a wind back tool to push the pistons back ?
Don't want any suprises when I do em !

No, they're a 4pot design and (as Pete rightly says..) just push back. Iirc, it's usually only sliding single pot calipers that 'wind' back.
Just try to push them back square as possible (use a flat piece of timber of suitable size) and you should be able to do it by hand (two at a time/side). If not the a 'C/G' clamp positioned in middle of pots (acting on the wood) does it nicely..
Basically, if you use a screw driver, levering one side of a pot at a time (iyswim) you risk scoring the piston bores..
The other thing, which you're probably aware of is ensuring the fluid reservoir doesnt overflow as the pistons/pots go back..!
Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs BTW..

Although not essential, Machine Mart do a piston push back tool for about £15 and a reverse impact hammer for about £5 which is well handy for pulling out gunged up pads. I find these tools very helpful.
