Classic v Newage STI

Default Classic v Newage STI

How would a remapped UK classic compare performance wise to a remapped UK STI?

The reason I ask is because I may get rid of my STI that is around 340bhp, but I would like a classic with similar straight line performance.
Would I have to go for an import classic STI to match my current car's performance or is the UK car man enough.

Id suggest an import STi as the heads are so much more better than UK ones in terms of raised rev limit and better cams etc its easier to get the gains you want

Just looked at your profile. How does your spec C compare to the 'R' ?

Both cars are fantastic to drive but the C being a twinscroll comes on boost so early and pulls all the way to the redline and feels really well planted to the road i guess because of the extra weight,whereas the R being so much lighter feels very nimble and power comes in later.Both fantastic cars though in many ways

i just sold my type r and got a uk classic as were expecting another baby. brilliant car to drive i would say the best scooby that ive had sometimes got a little fed up with it as there isnt really a nice steady drive its all gear changes and not really a motorway cruiser either. but if my circumstances hadnt changed i would not of got rid of it.

Why would you want to change cars to something older, but same speed, most likely same insurance, petrol etc?

My STI is like a mobile ornament. It's immaculate and I treat it with too much respect. I want something a little more raw that I wont cry over if I scuff an alloy.
Ideally I want a bit of a special classic that is a weekend toy and a daily diesel commuter.

im in 2 minds whether to sell the Type R now in respect of the tax hikes but i do love the spec c also and i need my parking space back so one of them has to go

Well what you have to think about is would you really let your special classic get damaged either? You'll want to take it places because you want to drive it, and there's still risk of damaging it? Or are you saying if you had a classic you'd care less about it if it already had some dings etc?

you could try and get hold of a type r v-limited

but maybe an sti ra would be better

As for the specific question, my UK turbo was mapped by Power Engineering to 269HP (possibly a little optimistic I have to add)

Anyway, I was driving home one Sunday from RC racing, minding my own business and kinda tired from a full days racing. A 53 STI overtook me coming out of a small village. It was still in the 30 zone which really annoyed me like he was trying to say something and I thought about letting it go but I didn't

I stuck to the back of that STI until we got into town. He was local so knew the road as well as me. I wouldn't have had the power to overtake and to be honest if your both clogging it, overtaking is far to dangerous especially if you've no idea what the other persons abilities are.

I don't think it was mapped and probably not PPP either but gives you an insight into power to weight

Although my boot was full of RC equipment.


However, I've had on the cards either a Prodrive bugeye STI, P1, Type R V Lim WRC or an V4-6 STI RA. Looking at between 8-10K next year. Its a keeper as I'll never go through the pain of selling an Impreza again but this new tax malarky puts a downer on the bugeye. At £200 more a year thats £1000 every 5 years which is a bit much for a car thats only going to be a weekend and fine day car.

My friend has a classic import WRX and in the real world my STI has only a very small advantage (straight line anyway)

Just for reference: MY99 UK Classic with just a decat and increased boost pressure resulted in an easy 0-100mph in 13.4s with an inexperienced driver and a clutch that was on the way out.

Not sure how that would compare to your UK STi Newage?

A std 95 WRX apart from 3" turbo back exhaust was held up by a std 05 STI PPP straight line

My classic is enough for me. Would have thought a 320bhp classic would match a 350bhp new age - simply because of the weight difference if nothing else. But then I'm guessing a bit

Tough question... ultimately, if you throw enough money at a classic it would be quicker as it is a lighter car. However, I have a newage UK STi that I've spent well under a grand on (engine wise) and am running 360/390. The torque alone produced from the 2.5ltr engine is the decisive factor for me.

Stick a 2.5ltr in a classic and there's no contest.

Sounds like a great set up Mikkel. Personally I would take that before a classic. Better interior, likely to have better handling. A better car, basically.

I would go for the newage as the classic is getting on now.

To coin a SN phrase, a STANDARD newage will see off a classic STI in the twisties.

Consider that for a 2007 car, a classic STi is probably 8 years behind in terms of development.

Not necesserally more fun thought I might add...

Thanks mate, yeah I am happy with it. I went newage as opposed to classic largely due to the interior and gadgets... I do like my creature comforts I have to admit. Handling wise I can't really comment as only been driven in a classic and not actually driven one. It does make sense that a newer car would handle better though with all the technology they throw at them.
