Default 03 Sti versus 05 WRX

I'm thinking of changing my Impreza to one of the above but I cant decide which one.
I'm currently running a 320/320 MY99 turbo.

I like my 320bhp so I'm not too sure how I'd cope with downgrading to 220, however I do prefer the front end of an 05 plate to the 03.
I could buy an 05 and modify it to 320 but then I could just save the hassle and keep what I have.

I like the idea of an Sti and its the obvious upgrade to what I currently have but I prefer the looks of my classic to it.

Would an Sti hold its money better than an 05 WRX?
What sort of power does a standard Sti have and what sort of power/mods can be acheived?

All comments greatly appreciated.

That 05 WRX is indeed a good looking beast, but 88k? How many miles does the STi have?

When you said 03 STI i assumed you meant a blobeye not a bug.
Can you not get an 03 STI for a similar price to a 05 WRX ?
Anyhow, Blob STI every time, 265bhp as standard and upgradable to what ever your buget will allow, i believe the engine internals are better as well.
Just noticed the price on the WRX, didn't realise they were so cheap.

The spare grand will get you about 330 bhp from the STI... six speed box, stiffer suspension, better brakes, nicer interior, good colour (!)
Poorer fuel consumption, higher insurance, and bigger spares bills when needed.

Mine's ace ! So I'm biased.

I test drove the WRX when I was trading my 97 Classic running 320/300. The biggest let down ever and was so unbeliveably lardy............yes you could sort the suspension etc but as an out of the box package I think its really poor.

My STI aint the best example of being happy with what you have as I've spent thousands on it but sti v wrx debate really wasn't something I ever needed to think about to be honest. The looks aren't the best either..........If you want a blob save a bit more cash and go for the sti.

Best of luck with whatever you decide..............

Why do you 'not' want the classic shape anymore. I would have bought a classic shape scoob STI, if it wasn't for my needs as a daily driver.

Are classics getting too old to be named reliable? I would have bought this SUBARU IMPREZA STI TYPE R VERSION 6 from here WRC Sales - Showroom

I have a 05 Blob Sti BTW

My Impreza is my daily driver. I usually do around 200/250 miles a week.

I also have 3 kids so a 2 door coupe isnt really practical.
I do like the classic Sti's but for some reason, i've always looked on them as unreliable as you always see them breaking for spares with blown engines or bearings gone.
I also had an RS Twin turbo Legacy which the bottom ends went on so I'm not too keen on another import.

A UK Sti just ticks all the boxes really, except for that front end.....and the WRX is newer for the same money.

Not much. I'm not home till 6pm so theyre hardly in it during the week, and maybe twice at weekends for and hour at most. Theyre still quite young and small (18months, 4 and 7)
We do go holidays twice a year though in the car which is around 300miles and 7 hrs away.
But I does that really justify getting a WRX over an STi, since I drive it every day?
Or does it justify getting a WRX? Maybe I need to start thinking about what they want and not about Dad getting ANOTHER new toy?

I have an 2003 STi (had 2002 WRX prior) Thge STI is worlds apart from the WRX.

I often think about swapping mine for a cheap, classic STI as I am always paranoid about getting in knocked on nicked as it is my pride and joy.
I could do with something a bit more 'rough and ready' that I wouldn't be as bothered about but is still rapid.

Or..........like you, perhaps I should get something that my kids can get in without getting bollocked all the time and is more economical.

STi every time. By the time you finish modding a WRX up to an STi level, which you will do, you could have just bought an STi in the first place and not be embarrassed to wear the badge.

I don't really like bugs but you can get those headlight mask things which disguise some of the ugliness. You would need to be running around 350-360bhp in a newage to match your classic due to weight.

Definitely go STI in my opinion.

I got the WRX new, but I so wish I'd got the STI instead... My WRX is not standard any more and probably a bit faster than a PPP STI, but it's cost me a bomb to get there and then I still haven't sorted the suspension or gearbox out....

Should I just keep my classic then, with the best looks, quickest acceleration and spend the couple of grand I have on a P1 gearbox and diff set up, bigger injectors, turbo and remap to 380bhp??? run it into the ground then break it??

If you love your classic keep it !
Not being rude, if you damaged it it's not the end of the world....
You could then transplant all the bits to a newer shell ?
Toys will be toys
