There have been a few threads recently where the term "do-gooder" has come up.

I must admit, I've begun to wonder if I'm one... tell me what you think:

I bought my Impreza because I believed it to be a great drivers car with the added bonus of it being something of a rally icon. (Whether you agree with me on that point or not doesn't really matter.)

Sure it's not the best car in the world, but it's what I wanted and I still love it

I did not choose this particular car just to do lots of motorway work or just to pop down the shops.

I enjoy driving it.
Sometimes my driving might be described as "spirited", other times not.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not a maniac on the public roads - I do pay close attention to the conditions of the road and adjust my driving accordingly and I believe I maintain a good awareness of other road users.
But I do enjoy the car for what it is.

What bothers me though, is the constant references to racing on the roads in this forum.

Surely racing other vehicles is more about a test of nerve between two drivers, rather than who's car is quickest?
If you race, can you honestly say that you stay well within your own limits of ability, or does bravado take over?
If so, then is it right to indulge racing on the public highways?

Before any asks - of course I've been tempted by the "traffic light grand prix" before, but frankly I'm $hit scared that my ego will get the better of my talent, so I don't get involved.

So what do you think?

Having read this back, I realise I run the risk of sounding sanctimonious, but it's how I feel.

I am not having a go at anyone in particular, so please be gentle.

I was driving calmly & according to conditions (they svcked) ...

Yeah, I do the occasional spirited driving, only to ... back off after a while, because the speeds & ability of the car surpasses my own abilities to be honest.

I need room like on Bruntingthorpe to really "let the beast out".

Mind you, it's all a lot of banter really, and I see just as many threads from people that sadly stuffed their cars, who bring the point back that it's a good car, not a miracle on wheels.

You mean AWD != invulnarability?
I guess its true as I had no way of avoiding getting rear-ended by a woman last Sunday while waiting at the traffic lights. Ironic it seems that the only crash that ever happened to me was while stationary, queing up at the traffic lights. Maybe karma has bitten back for all the "lucky" escapes that I had in a car....

If you were racing from a traffic light - the adrenalin would be pumping, red mist sets down, you are not going to let that other car beat you.

Off you go - a kid steps out in front of you - at worst that could even be your own kid. You can't stop in time.

You are not being a do-gooder at all. You are being a responsible driver, that is far more admirable than proving your car can beat some one elses. (Unless on track )

On the road always Think before you act. Consider the consequences of driving like an idiot. If we all did that then I am sure there would be less deaths.

If your not going to use a fast car then dont buy one! Too many middle age men are taking an early retirement or cashing in their pensions and buyin scoobs evos etc. If you arent going to use the power then stick to mondeo diesels. Sorry but i had to get that off my chest, a guy (55+)down the road owns an evo 6 and ive never seen him top 40. In moderation racing is part of owning a subaru, case closed!

Chelle, agree 100 % My father once killed an old lady on a bike who just suddenly crossed the road behind a tree. I was a kid then, but I'll never forget how he moved round the house like a zombie for a week or so. He wasn't even racing or anything.

I think personally that I would kill myself (can I hear a crowd cheering in the background ) if I would hurt anyone during a red mist session.

That is my opinion too well hung, but I prefer it being on track where you can really unleash the beast

I spent a lot of time racing around when I first got my scoob, looking back I am amazed I didn't kill myself or anyone else for that matter.
It's all very well having that kind of opinion till it goes wrong. Once you have killed someone there is no going back is there? A bit melodramatic yes, but driving fast to the conditions and cirmcustances has to be done with incredibly good judgement. Drive fast, but drive safe.

Track Days + GT3 = Racing (for mortals)

I think a few people on here forget that they are not rally drivers. Dont get carried away, use the performance when it is safe, if your not sure take it easy. Its to easy to read Evo and the other mags and get caught up in the bull**** about midrange grunt, lift off oversteer, performance figures and all that cack.

I think there is a happy medium somewhere here.

Everytime we arrived at the Pub I would "justify" my tardiness in terms of how expensive it would be to crash my 22b

He would remind me he knew the road like the back of his hand and it was effectively his test track.

One day he hit the local hunt.

Yesterday I found myself being bollocked by a colleague after I said I had nipped over to Germany and tried a car out at upto 150MPH on a derestricted road with no traffic.

He thought I should be locked up as 150MPH sounds alot, 30 MPH is too much outside a school, there is a time and a place........

RichS, I have to agree with your theory of ego (not evo) overtaking you, but can assure you that I always drive within my own ability. I cannot afford to crash my car to prove a (pointless) point.

When I drive fast (ideally with no other basta*d about), I drive using the ability of the car with its Prodrive fettled spenshun and 17" P-Zeros not with a warped belief that I am Richard Burns!

Okay,

I never said anything about always observing the speed limit no matter what.
I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't enjoy the performance of our cars in the appropriate conditions.
(I'm no angel myself believe me - I didn't buy a fast car to drive it slowly everywhere.)

This thread is specifically about racing other cars on the road.

Without finger pointing or sermonising (at least I tried not to), I intended to start a lively discussion on the subject.

It seems while i have been watching the footy people have got me the wrong idea of what i meant. I did say racing within reason,not just rallying around all the time, i know all about crashing after a severe tripple nose to end flip a few years ago but if i looked at it the wrong way i wouldnt even want to drive again never mind race. Basically i dont see the point in spending all your hard earned cash on power that you dont use. Find a nice escort cossie kick his *** and then think about it again. Nothing will give you more pleasure, apart from sex. By the way you dont know how big my todger is, just because your tall doesnt mean you are well endowed, plus its what you do with it that counts! I agree with him as well racing is not for the roads, but nor is it for track days, contrary to other opinions. If you want to race things then enter into a competitive race series and get your kicks that way.

LOL @ Rob Hmmm - Define "Racing" - There is not a safe place on the roads to use the power and ability Suburu Turbo has. If your charging along a road at 100mph and someone does something unexpected you ability to react is bu66erd! if your charging down twist roads whos to say whats round the corner - guy on a bike? - someone pulling out of a concealed drive? Unless you slow down to a reasonable speed for each corner so you can stop - you are driving dangerously. I doubt there is anyone on this board who has not driven "dangerously" - if you have not then sell the car!!

It's dawned on me recently that I tend to drive everywhere like a loono! I got to the end of a road, a particular favourite of mine and was really shaking! I couldn't really remember driving the road but knew there was no way on earth that car could get over that road any quicker!

I think I've outgrown my Fiesta, which worries me cos I want a Scoob, what happens if I outgrow that, I'm gonna be going at a serious pace, hell I keep up with scoobs now!..what if something goes wrong?

The new girlfriend doesn't like going fast and gets me to slow down ( not that I even get anywhere near warp speed with her)...going slow is not that bad, is it?

Oh yeah, not into racing, if someone comes past..big deal!

The answer to your problem is, once you have a Scoob, take it on the track!!!! That usually calms you down loads on the road (well in my experience anyway).

Pehaps think about investing in some sort of Advance Driving course (e.g. IAM or RoSPA). They usually open your eyes and slow you down when it's important!! (but often seem to have the reverse effect when it's not ( )
