Default My New Impreza

Just bought a Scooby WRX 1992, everything all seems fine but i cant drive it legally until april for insurance reasons which is driving me mad as its just sat outside my house although i did get to drive it home from plymouth for 200miles

It has a blitz nur spec r full system with no cat which as u can imagine makes it extremely load and an induction kit which iv forgoten what make it is. also it had a bottom end engine rebuild about 10k miles ago.

With it being an old impreza am i looking to have much problems with it even tho it has had the engine rebuild?? i am new to scoobies but definatly share the enthusiasm. i no cars go bang if u abuse them! Im obviously goin to use its speed occasionaly lets face it thats why you buy it but i will look after it.

Any advice from people on places to buy new parts, iv been looking for new brake pads but they only seem to sell ones for the 94 onwards models on every place i look. Also what BHP do u think this will be running? the guy who sold it to me said around 300 which i dont believe for a second but it feels more then the 240 that wikipedia suggests.

Cheers guys!!

Standard is 240ps (236bhp).

I've had my 93wrx for nearly 5 years and it has been driven 'spiritedly' and it's fine as i get it serviced regularly

brakes are **** on early models so you can either uprate the discs/pads (speak to Alyn at AS Performance - Rally Motorsport Specialists for suggestions) or change the calipers to late model 4 pots (check your wheel size before if you have 17s you shouldn't have any problem).

Thanks for the info, it is a jap import and feels pretty powerful! atm i drive a Civic vti-s which is 170hp and the scooby feels really fast compared to it.

As it has no cats on it and a full system + induction kit will this add anything onto the standard BHP that it comes with? I will look into upgrading the brakes, will see what your link has to offer cheers

the decat will give a few more bhp ,also allows quicker spool up of the turbo.

when you get it MOTd make sure that the tester gives it the Basic Emissions Test (this has cropped up on here so many times on here) as it's a pre July 95 import.

for the ik it will be worth making a sheild for it to stop it sucking in hot air from the engine bay especially at standstill.

Its in for MOT this month i got a mate doing it so i think it shud be fine on emissions

also what is the IK? the guy i bought it from suggested a heat shield above the turbo. I will take a pic of the engine bay and add it to my pro at some point. Is it true the sti has a silver intercooler where as the wrx does not?

WRX/STi Cars

With 276+ bhp, and 260 lb/ft of torque, mated to a shorter close ratio gearbox, the later Japanese specification Impreza’s have the ability to out accelerate virtually all other cars on the road. Official figures are 0–62mph (100km/h) in about 4.9 seconds, although a Tye R was timed at 4.3 seconds (0–60) by Performance Car in the UK. In standard form, these cars are limited to 112mph by Japanese law, but bypassing the speed limiter enables them to reach top speeds of about 150mph+ You certainly wouldn’t want to run the cars at this speed for any period of time, as the fuel consumption would be well down into single figures!!!

Standard Cars

One of the main reasons for anyone buying the Impreza is the absolutely stunning levels of performance it offers for the money. For the 4 door saloon, Subaru claim 6.4 seconds for the 0–62 mph (100 km/h) sprint, and a maximum speed of 143.5 mph (97/98 models). The figures for the five door hatchback are 6.5 seconds and 142 mph respectively. All of this from a standard car costing around £21,000 on the road!

As many performance tests have proved over the years, these figures (particularly acceleration) are somewhat conservative.

Both Performance Car and Autocar magazines tested the 4 door saloon (pre ‘97 model) with an identical 5.9 seconds for the dash to 60 mph. These tests were carried out with a driver, passenger and a full tank of fuel over a number of runs to eliminate the effects of wind assistance/resistance.

On 4th Feb. 98, Autocar tested a 1998 specification five door hatchback. A top speed of 143 mph was recorded, with the 0–60 mph time being dispensed with in only 5.5 seconds, and 0–100 mph in 15.8. The standing 1/4 mile was completed in 14.2 seconds at 97 mph. The 30–70 mph increment was achieved in 5.6 seconds (a whole 1 second faster than a manual Porsche Boxster!)

Take it easy for the first few miles to let the oil warm up properly and the same for getting to the end of your journey drive off boost for a couple of miles before reaching your destination.

A boost gauge is always useful thing to get

Try not to let the petrol gauge go below 1/4 of a tank, you wont believe how quick that last 1/4 can disappear when your having fun.
