The STI! The WRX Type-RA was the poverty model; cheapest in the range with many features deleted. As they progressed the benefits (to the driver) found in the A & B series cars disappeared too.....

Poverty model? they were built to be used as rally cars thats why all the crap you don't need was left off - leaving you with a proper car not a compromise. For an out and out weekend racer/toy the RA is the one to choose.

If you can find one, get an STi RA, worlds apart to a normal STi/WRX. For a weekend toy they are perfect.
I would recommend comparing the drive to a normal STi/WRX

Depends on your budget, if you have a bit of money to spare you could source an STi v6 Type RA V-Limited (or WRX V-Limited). These come with all the bells and whistles like:
Quickrack steering
Quickshift gearbox
DCCD (STi RA's only)
Full Electrics
Roof Vent
If you can't source those anything like a v3 STi Type RA onwards would not be a bad choice (I much prefer the older RA looks), some of the older models come with the bullit proof closed deck blocks.
Get onto Type-RA.co.uk as there are plenty of informative members on there.

Yes they were the poverty model: the WRX Type-RA was by far the cheapest turbocharged Impreza (¥2.1 million as opposed to ¥2.3 million: thats 10% cheaper than a WRX saloon). As I have already stated: the differences were minor and practically they were even less noticable. As the series evolved the differences became even less noticable/worthwhile. They werent built to be rally cars, they were built to enable homologation of the type.
The WRX STI Type-RA is a completely different model.

The RA was cheaper because it has less tat like spoilers, lecy windows, CL etc to pay for.
I think your making a big deal over the price and losing sight of what the RA is really about........

sorry to hijack but im after a 2 door and the more i look at them the more i cant make my mind up, when i bought the blob it was an impulse kind of thing didnt even test drive it. but im looking for more fun and the classic shape has really grown on me now.
So is there a wrx sti type ra that is 2 door? should i just get a p1 im not looking to track the car just have a fun driving experience whilst still taking the kid in the car every now and again, so a wrx type ra is out for me. any advice please

The greater majority of two door WRX Imprezas are STIs, which have manic gearing and DCCD. The are far fewer WRX Type-Rs: these have an applied model number that appears to indicate that they are two door Type-RAs, although Subaru hasnt ever marketed them as such. The UK P1 is like the V5 b*stard son of these two models...

Subaru did not make two door type Ra.............I remember a 2 door type ra owned by a guy who posted on here as Leonpoole which had no side skirts ,dccd, etc but had roof vent and an ra sticker on the rear.
The car turned out to be a type r limited as i remember him posting here saying he had contacted subaru japan and they had confirmed it.
The various sites that state the 2 door ra have there information wrong.I think the confusion came from the engine code that was used on this particular model.....
