hello and gearbox question.
Hi all. new to the site and i've already broken it.
First off its an impreza WRX wagon from back in 1994. i got it with a bit of a rattly gearbox but i got a decent deal.
Anyhow, i took it out to see what they're all about and gave it a bit down a few lanes. The result was the gearbox gave up and now will only crawl along while banging and knocking. Oh well - i knew it would anyway. The question i have is what gearbox's will fit? the numbers on the 'box are 655 449 and EF-TY752VB3AA.
now im not bothered if the ratio's arent the same as long as they're not silly.
for instance would a 8X - TY752VN6AA fit
if so what would be the differences?
thanks in advance.
simon.

Hi mate
You will need a gearbox with VB in the number not VN like the other box number you quoted. VB is a wrx box which is what you need VN is a UK box and wont work.
hope this helps

thanks for that mate. any ideas of the numbers im after? i was kind of hoping a uk box would do as there seems to be more choice. Oh well. im sure i'll get a cheap (well reasonable) one somewhere.

wrx gearboxes are of a closer ratio that uk boxes, ie wrx=5th in 40 is 2k rpm while 4th at 40 is 2k rpm (uk). acceleration.
my gearbox recently went. same symptoms as you. has cost me £900+ from api to have a uk standard box built as a recon. then labout charges from the garage fitting it, plus new exedy clutch and skimmed flywheel.
that plus a full service and labout is gonna cost me around £1700 all in.
unless you source a low mileage unabused gearbox from elsewhere.
need to sort the ratio out otherwise youll foof the differentials.

ok, so the 'box ratio's are important for the diffs? sound. i'll just have to wait until a jap box comes up at the right money then. if i thought it was going to cost that kind of cash it would be breaking for spares.
