What d'ya reckon Guys ? What am I to spend my £27K on ?

My P1 is very useable on a day to day basis. If you don't cane it its really quite civilised.
When you want to shift its got more power than the Sti 7 and will easily eliminate more traffic etc. Costs for running are probably identical and its a year old so most of the the money is already lost on it. Take into account its 5k cheaper for the P1 used than Sti 7 with PPP and its already shaping up that way. Also, P1 is limited edition (1000) and looks better imho.
On other hand, STi7 is supposed to be more polished and smoother. If you want smooth go buy a turbo diesel, you arent buying an STi or P1 for smoothness, lets face it! Its all down to whether a) you like the new shape, i personally am still unconvinced even with all the extra cash and mods you need/can get b) Can live with paying more for a car with less c) Desperately need refinement - if so, i suggest pick a completely different car.

Whichever you go for, make sure you get the scoobysport backbox - central London is a blast with all the high sided buildings for aural pleasure. Search the site for comparisons - I think there have already been several debates about this kind of thing.
I may be shortly selling my P1 (Y,6k) if you are interested.

If you spend 27k on a P1 you must be out of your mind.
All this crap that the new STI is a lot slower is crap as shown by Autocar today.
Yes a P1 will get to 60 about .3 of a second quicker, and about a 1 sec quicker to 100. Through the gears where it counts its equal
You will also get the option in the future of a PPP most likely. That will probably take the car upto 300bhp (according to a dealer yesterday prodrive have a 320 STI on test). The car will then be fully warranted and have P1 eating ability
Most people that post on here how the P1 is better have not really owned a new shape let alone test driven one. How many have actually driven a UK STI ?
Yes I have owned a P1 and UK300 PPP. The UK STI will be the best Scooby yet. When I owned the UK300 it beat the P1 in lots of areas. The only one it really lost out to it on was power. Thats now solved plus you get a nice 6 speed box, front limited diff and Brembos as std.
For 27k there is only one choice

Hate to say it but I would probably go for the STI as I think is more sensibly priced and has some nice new features (Oh how I need a 6 gear for the RA ). For 27K I would be rathered tempted by an import 22B though just for the sheer owning/pose value experience []. When you got to meets/trackdays its the 22's which pull the crowds .

Modrapheniac,
Three weeks ago I had the same choice as you have now. It took me about 2 seconds to decide and I'm the prowed owner of a new P1. I did have a MY97 before and the difference is amazing! Before you all start I have driven the new WRX and it felt like someone had grandadised a once fast car, not my cup of tea.
Anyway choice is yours...
Mike
[Edited for this after thought] What happens to all you brand new UK STI owners when the prodrive re-designed new shape comes out next year? Another out dated worthless peice of ... like the P1?

What redesign. Oh the one Autocar mentioned . Now there's a mag that always knows the latest NOT. Just get some old copies out and read what the P1 was going to be and wasnt.
I'm up for a few bets on it looking pretty similar.
P1 is still a great car, but not at close to even 25k. Buy one at 21k and you have a great car at a great price. Pay more and dont come crying when you see even a Mondeo lose money at a slower rate.

My guess it there will be a facelift for the MY03 as they tend to run in 2 year cycles. Cosmetic changes and phase 2 engine at MY99 new shape MY01, so maybe not a full redesign but the MY02 is not a big chnage to the MY01 so they must be planning something big (maybe 1600kgs this time and 400 bhp )

My guess is the prodrive redesign will come in for MY04, and launched at the end of 2003... Remember the original impreza turbo was launched in the UK with MY94 and facelifted with MY97...
I don't think the prodrive facelift will be as major as suggested either...
As to P1 vs New STI, I'd go for the new STI... The P1 will be a depreciation disaster as soon as the cars enter the general trade (ie when cars get to 3 years old and are auctioned). Trade estimates put a 3 year old P1 as worth no more than a 3 year old WRX ie under £9.5k
Now the P1 is great, looks great and goes well, but the new UK STI is sensibly priced and though it is very ugly. Fortunately the new car does have some redeming features - Proper brakes, better handling, (slightly)better build quality...
Now personally rather than spend £22k on a P1, I'd spend £14-15k on an STI5, essentially the same car and a healthy discount
That or a skyline

Let's not dismiss the P1 just yet. It is still the only official Prodrive car other than the souped up 550 Maranello that has done so well recently. Putting Prodrive equipment on a non-Prodrive car is not really the same,so I stil rate the new STi as a catted homg version of a good import, which is really not the same.
I still think the RB5 is a fantastic car, despite ever driving one...

I should point out here that I was refering to Trade and not retail price... I'm not trying to wind P1 owners up, but if anyone has financed a P1 over three years recently and paid a realistic price I suspect they would be quoted similar values to me - in October I was quoted a GFV of £9400 on P1 and £9300 on a WRX after 3 years). The P1 was £27k, the WRX £21k
Personally, It's unlikely I would buy and new car ever... But I was interested in Test driving a MY01 hence I got quotes for finance.
Subaru dealers kept the prices high on P1's as up until recently they still had new ones to sell. Hence when P1's are available to the general trade, ie when subaru dealers have lost interest or fleet cars go to auction, expect big losses. To the trade the P1 is an old model, slow seller - to the enthusiast it is one of the better imprezas.
3 year old UK turbos can be had for the above price currently - look at auction prices (and remember I did say trade prices). Just before xmas someone was offering a Dec 1998 MY99 for £8995 with 36k. It was a good price for a car which from the photos looked ok, though the seller said there were a couple of scratches.

Fair enough Jon.
I still disagree with the prices you quote but acknowledge the price depreciation. It is unfortunate for us late impreza owners.
Still, a Mitsi evo VI is now 17k so the whole market is rather depreciated I think. Let's celebrate curremt ownership and not worry too much about future values - hopefuly we'll all have got those Y3K bonuses and be looking at F355's by then!

Chopper,
Why you planning on selling yours then and what you gonna get instead? UK STi?
Polarbearit,
9.5k at three years is overly pessimistic. If it were true a 2.5 year old UKSti will be worth about the same at that point in time its all relative. The basic rule of thumb here is that all cars depreciate!

Until these questions get sensible objective responses rather than the emotive defensive efforts most resort to shouldn't they be moved to the muppet forum?
