Default Newbie Help - DCCD / buying guide

Hi,

Just looking for a few pointers / links so I can thoughly search.

I want a scooby with the DCCD Diff control, am I right in thinking on a sub £7500 budget this means a Type R / RA ?

Are all the Type R / RA's STi's ?

Do all STi's have red top engines ?

What do I need to know before buying one ?

Cheers

Thumbs up Type RA Information

Check out this website for information on the Type RAs - a few Type R owners on the site also:

Type-RA.co.uk - Home of the Subaru Impreza WRX Type RA, Impreza WRX STi Type RA, Impreza Type RA V Limited, Scooby V. Ltd, visit the WRX forum & Subaru forum

You will be able (with your budget) to buy an excellent example of a Type RA or Type R

I have owned my Type RA for a couple of years, and know of the various "issues" relating to purchasing and running these superb cars.

Please feel free to ask away..............

Richard

yes your generally correct, although there are always few annomolies in Classics.

AFAICR On certain Years STi models it was an purchase option to have either DCCD or ABS (couldn't have both on a Classic) so not all Type R's have DCCD (although rare)

as above 99.9% STi RA's and 98% STi Type R's hace DCCD and some WRX STi's have DCCD

IIRC after a certain year they did My94/5 ??

Just remember there was a WRX RA 4dr, WRX STi RA 4dr and a few rare WRX STi RA 2 dr

But as Richard says above as on the RA site or you'll end up with a lot of hearsay, which i may have added to before you buy double check the Chassis code as log books could say RA but it ain't there are some "Forgery's" "Dogs" out there IMHO

Thanks for the replies.

I've had a std uk scoob before and wanted something with a bit more 'fun factor' I'm told the DCCD does that.

Been reading loads but there is a lot of contradicting info about.

Is there a definative list of specs etc so I know what I'm buying ?

Welcome to Type-RA.co.uk - Home of the Subaru Impreza WRX Type RA

WRX RAs do not have DCCD and do not have roof vent

STi RAs do have DCCD and roof vent.

I have never seen either a WRX RA or STi Type RA with the same specification (e.g. some had wind up windows/some electric; some have aircon/some don't).

Early STi RAs were white:

Red Top engine from with Version 3 intercooler:

Later ones available in blue:

WRX RA (Matt's in red):

RA stands for "Race Altered"
The model code is a seven digit code used to identify each model in the range.

This code is found on the VIN plate in the engine bay.

The following list breaks down the code reading from left to right.

Series code: G=Impreza S=Forester B=Legacy
Body type: F=Wagon C=Sedan
Engine type: 8=2.0L Turbo

Year code: A=MY93 B=MY94 C=MY95/96 D=MY97 E=MY98 F=MY99 G=MY00

Number of doors: 2=2 door coupe 4=4 door saloon 5=5 door sports wagon

Model type: 8= WRX 7= Type RA E = STi D =STi Type R & RA

Transmission: D=5 Speed Manual AWD P=4 Speed Automatic AWD

Broken down, the model code of an MY 95 WRX STi Type RA would be GC8C47D.

G : Impreza
C : Sedan (saloon)
8 : 2.0 Turbo
C : MY95 - click here for MY info
4 : 4 doors
7 : Type RA - (Please note, the STi was modified from the production WRX, which would most likely explain the similarity in model codes - later STis & RAs has a designated letter & not a number)
D : 5 speed manual

However, I am sure (100%) that no RA owners would do this to their Imprezas:
