Question

hi as a scoobie newbie and a turbo 4wd "virgin" so to speak can anyone point me in a direction to find out more technical detail on my car an irish spec MY00, ie what turbo(vf wotsit or td), drivetrain detail (lsd's etc) and varoius specs and how these things work and what effect they have on driving, sorry for the back to basics but Id just like to gain some more knowledge...

From memory:

torque split 60/40 front to rear (it's the ratio of the axle ratios)
type of turbocharger TD04 (I think it's Mitsubishi)
front is open mechanical diff, centre is viscous LSD, rear is some sort of LSD.

www.drivingtechniques.co.uk should tell you what effect these have on driving

Wink

To add to Carls' post;
  • the front dif is "open", ie. it has no form of locking mechanism.
  • the centre and rear difs are viscous diffs, ie. they have a viscous coupling that allows shear, but the more of it that occurs the more it resists it (until the unit overheats!). This allows the wheels to turn relatively easily at different speeds around corners (when the difference is small) but resists the spinning of one wheel relative to another if it looses traction completely.
  • mechanical limited slip diffs tend to be less smooth in action (exhibited as a clonky behaviour) and cause problems with low speed steering.

Hope that helps!
