BUT
I don't think just a turbo is sufficient for 400bhp on WRX internals mate. You'll be looking at uprated pistons and rods if you want it to remain reliable in the long term.

Not really , you will require a Garrett based hybrid of some description....
Plenty to choose from , MD195s from Turbo Dynamics , MD321H or T from Lateral performance , the SC range from Scoobyclinic and the FP Green from lots of UK sources or direct from the States....

You are pretty much there with your current spec apart from the turbo, carefully doen there is not really a major problem with reliability, I think someone should have mentioned clutch and gearbox though, gets overlooked a bit does that.
I've done several cars to about that level (WRX and Sti).
The 20G isn't a 400 bhp turbo on pump fuel, you need something that will make the power at lowish boost, thats the way to get good reliability. MD321H is the turbo of choice in that respect at the moment, ring Mark at Lateral, the rest don't really compare. You don't "have" to have a Garrtet based turbo btw, its just that the current crop of good hybrids happen to be biased that way.
What inducton/intake are you using ?
best regards
Bob

For some reason, I've gotten the impression that the new age engine is more reliable than the classic. Does it have slightly different internals, or is it purely an age thing (where the classic engines are suffering fatigue)?

Depends how you want to drive it I guess. If it's an everyday car and you want some headroom to give it the full beans regularly, then it's probably best if you upgrade. If not, then maybe it's a chance to nothing, so to speak. Ditto for gearbox. There is no point in having a car upgraded if you're frightened to use the extra omph for fear of breaking it though!

It will be an expensive time Getting 400Bhp out of the wrx with standard gearbox. They say they are good for 300Bhp on the 5 speed, so you are lucky with it running smoothly with 320Bhp.

I might be wrong here but have seen many cars on AFP TD05 20G making 400bhp or very close to, running fuel additives such as NF octane booster, methanol etc.
Would this not be more cost efficient than such as an MD321h as it is around half the price on a car that is only used as a weekend toy?
Besides that what do you want 400bhp for anyway when u clearly struggle toi drive the 319 u already have!!!!

The difficulty comes when you try and quote an average figure achievable on most set ups, it always gets compared to the best or worst figure that someone has achieved on a similar set up.
On an average set up the 321H will make approx 20 bhp more than a 20G.
Attention to heat management and airflow detail can also find you 20bhp as can octane booster, there are many ways to achieve 400bhp.
