Head Gasket im afraid, same happened to me with my classic, better stop driving it as you are only doing more damage.
smoke is water mixing with the oil causing white ish smoke.

Holy piston...probably.
The Impreza is known for melting pistons.
Loss of oil+ loss of compression+ lots of smoke are the very symtoms of this problem.
Either way, it doesn't matter if its rings, piston or head gasket as in all cases, the engine has to come out and the cylinder head needs to come off anyway.
If it is a piston; then ensure the cause has been fixed after the engine has been repaired. Otherwise it'lll do it again. ECU malfunction (such as airflow sensor or failing fuel pump/blocked fuel filter), dodgy modifictions (mapped "to the limit", too much boost, bleed valves or boost controllers with fuel cut bypass etc). Or using the wrong fuel on a mapped car or normal unleaded in a 260/280ps Jap import that's not been re-mapped for Uk fuel.
Also, if piston's gone, I bet the bigs ends are on their way out as well. So could well be rebuild time.
