They are like any Impreza mechanically - if you mean build quality. Performance wise, they're a bit more hard-core than say a UK 2000 or a WRX.

Assuming that you're coming from a Golf 150 tdi; don't expect VAG quality plastics etc.

Performance wise, they're a world appart from your Golf. I've had various TDI's as company cars - from a 150tdi Astra to a Jetta TDI and it's chalk and cheese. Drive one and see how you feel about it.

I have a craving for a 3door 98 Impreza STI, doesnt have to be the type R

I'm just wondering how good the engines are in them( reliablilty, cost of mending, ....)

Oh and yeah a 2002 190BHP(remapped from 150BHP) GT TDI GOLF

3 door it would have to be a Type R - the rest are 4 doors.

They are reliable if looked after, although the imports should really be remapped for piece of mind.

As for cost if things go bang - not cheap, £3-4k for a decent rebuild imo.

Oh, and performance wise a TypeR or normal 4 door STi of that year will be approx. 90-100bhp more than your Golf and approx the same weight.

I'd say about £6k for a 98 TypeR?

Again, if its been looked after it shouldn't need a rebuild.

If I was going to buy an import, I'd want it to have been remapped for UK fuel for peace of mind - but I'm sure there are loads on saying that which haven't and are fine.

I just had a look on Pistonheads and there are not many on there.

Perhaps £6k is a bit off the mark, as this one is £9k:

Subaru : Impreza WRX STI TYPE R

Its a cracker though!

You'll never find a 3 door Impreza. The typeR is a coupe, 2 doors and a boot not a hatch.

If you're worried about
a) Economy
b) Servicing costs
c) Modding costs
d) Image
e) Interior quality
f) Comfort

Then a Classic Scooby STi is not for you.

If you wanna have fun, then you'll find that a classic STi will subject your Golf to cruel and unusual punishment. They're in different leagues, trust me!

Just sold my GT 150 TDI golf for a touran. That had been remapped to 190 BHP and 287lb per ft it was a awsome motor. Try and keep it if you can afford to and get the TYPE R for the week end mate. I have a TYPE R WRC v/ltd for my bit of fun now the golf's gone as the VW touran is a family car, slow, dont handle, nothin to look at and certainly dont get noticed in it.Had my TYPE R 3 yrs now and just a fantastic fun motor you will not be disapointed if you get one.

Get a Type R, you will not regret it.

I had one a few years back, had it for about two and a half years and never had a problem with it (It was modified to 320Bhp). As others have said just get one that’s been looked after, preferably remapped for UK fuel.

I changed the oil in mine every 3500-4000 miles and serviced it when it was due and it looked after me, it was on about 64k miles when I sold it and I actually bumped into the guy who brought it off me a few months back, it was still going strong and was on over 80k miles and he said he hadn't had a problem with it since he got it from me.

So I think all in all their pretty reliable.

On a run I would get about 300 miles to a tank, normal driving to work and back (A&B Roads) got about 235miles. Most expensive service was over £400 (cambelt change).
