I've just purchased a 1996 Subaru in fantastic nick and running order.

After hard driving, a fan appears to come on for a while!!

I know that you should let the car idle for a minute or so but do not know if a fan should come on!!

Is this normal?

Cool

I would possibly suggest that your "hard" driving has heated up the engine a bit ( ) & when you come to a stop, it's still hot. At that point the coolant heats up as there is no air rushing through the radiator grill, so it needs some assistance, hence the fan coming on

Happens to me often

The engine is hot and there is no ram air effect through the radiator to cool the engine so the fan would and should come on to reduce the temp. So you have no problems. let the motor tick over for a bit before switching off to allow for the turbo to cool after hard driving. Hence people fitting turbo timers to automaticly do this for them.
Enjoy your motor.
