Lightbulb Help with dodgy head lights please...?

Hi,
I am in need of some help with a fault with my head lights.
I am usually pretty good with wiring & electronics, but these are now baffling me....

It set off that 1 head light would go out, however if disconnected Then re-connected it would solve it and be ok for a day or so....
(it did this with both lights but only occasionally at same time)

The fault has now changed

When head lights are now turned on both elements of the bulbs light.
The drivers side is bright but the passenger side is dull.

If high beam is used still lights all 4 elements & drivers side does get brighter but passenger remains quite dull.

I have cleaned connections, changed bulbs, swapped relays around & multimetered connections.

The top connection of the bulb (earth i think) is getting so hot it has melted the plastic connector on both drivers & passenger sides.

I have also noticed that the relay labelled RH lights turns off both lights when removed, whereas relay labelled LH dose not seem to affect lights at all thou I can here it clicking ( I ahve swapped these around but faults stay same).

I spent quite a while on this yesterday & just got more confused before running out of natural light - so gave up.

its a 1999 V reg Sti 5 face lift with crystal lights.

Any Help would be great?

This sort of thing is often caused by a dodgy earth somewhere.

Find which is defo the earth return pin on the headlight, and connect them, one at a time, direct back to battery earth. Then do both. See if that has any effect.

Thanks, i've tried with just 1 wire to passanger side as that was close but did not seem to do any thing, i tried the drivers side but only to ground as wire i had was not long enough & as it was getting dark i needed to get it back together. I'll try both lights tomorrow.

Can any one confirm which pin is which? when i've metered it out the earth seems to be the middle pin at the top.

Well it will give nil volts. Whats the ressistance though? Set the metre on the ressistance setting. Put one side off the metre to the battery earth and the other side on the end of the wire. You should get a nil/zero reading.
