Default Subaru Servicing Costs......

Hi All,

Just booked a 10K service for MY55 STI at my Local Subaru Dealer (Cambridge).

They are quoting £150+VAT, this service is basically an oil change and fluid check.....and other checks I think or am I wrong.

Would you say this is too high?

Cheers

Welcome to the world of dealer servicing.

Breakdown of my 10K dealer service in 2004 including 10% SIDC discount.

Labour £86.45
Parts £35.12 (incl crappy Shell Helix oil)
Sundries £6.50
VAT £22.42

Total £150.49

Same service done by an independant after the warranty had run out.

Labour £33.75
Parts £46.94 (incl decent Silkolene fully synthetic oil & two number plate bulbs)
Sundries £3
VAT £14.66

Total £98.35

Dealers have to pay higher overheads which they pass on to you the customer. 10K on a 55 plate means you will have to stay with the dealer a bit longer then use a good independant & your running costs will be much less.

Further to the above post - You don't have to have your car serviced by a Subaru dealer, even during the warrenty period. As long as the garage is VAT registered and uses genuine or approved Subaru parts, your warrenty is intact. Pop down the A12 to Extreme Scoobies?

Just had my 04 WR1 serviced by local Subaru dealer & that cost me £150 + VAT! It`s only done 14k but I think it`s about average price & for the extra £50 I`d personally stick with the Subaru dealer for the stamp as it will add value to the car if yr selling on in the future !!

They used decent oil too & I`d make sure they do the same with yours !!

Good luck !!

Thats good to know John, but on a re-sale side most people would prefer a dealer service history.

Does it matter which dealer you use? Is there a big difference in price?

If the car is modified in anyway would you not then say a specialist stamp is better? Not sure which way I am going to go yet tbh... dealer stamp is a nice to have but what if they ***** it up, especially if the car being serviced is not factory standard.

Your ok...:-)

Also was wondering if you could get a better deal on servicing if you get something else done...say have a quick shift fitted?

Cheers

I would recommend AS Performance - Rally Motorsport Specialists half the price of a main dealer and really do know their stuff

This is who I was considering along with another local specialist, but what about my initial question about is it worth sacrificing the Subaru dealer stamp?

I'd rather see Alyn's stamp than a main dealer. You can then be sure everything was done that was supposed to be done and done properly. Couldn't say the same for a main dealer, I ended up successfully suing the one in Hull for things they charged for and didn't do which I could prove.

As above, most enthusiasts would rather see a specialists stamp. This is cos specialists often have more experience with the cars and the various parts, including third party parts. A specialist can only build a reputation on the quality of work and not gain business by default, simply through an affiliation with the manufacturer/distributor.

Even if the costs were the same (just get a quote from a dealer and a specialist for something like a cambelt service and you'll see the huge difference) I'd still choose a specialist over a dealer any day.

I'm in cambridge most of the week, I even bought my scoob from the dealer in Cambridge 5 yrs ago, but still travel to London to get mine serviced by a specialist.

My past 2 Scoobies had specialist servicing after the warranty expired , it didn't put off the buyers when I sold them, and I know it wouldn't put me off either , however if it had a Halfords service centre or Kwikfit type place stamp in the book I'd be put of a little . I think I would rather my pet dog have a go TBH

Booked mine in for its 2yr/20,000 today, going to a dealer as its under warranty and other than PPP its untouched, come next year when its due the 3 yr it wont be going to a stealer, from then on it will specialist time for mods and servicing

Problem is that whilst you will probably be ok selling a car with well known and respected Scooby specialist stamps in the service book to a real Scooby boy or girl, newcomers to the marque will be looking for main dealer stamps during the 3 year warranty period as that's what they are told to look out for by all the "buy a used car" guides otherwise they will be fearful that the manufacturer's warranty won't be honoured if they have a problem.

So, given that I would only save a few hundred quid, I'd use a well recommended main dealer - there are a few on here I see - until the 3 years are up.

Personally, and I reckon I speak for a lot of people on here, I would rather see a specialist stamp than a dealers. having said that, if the seller was capable of all the normal servicing tasks, I would not turn away from a car that had been serviced by its owner. I service my own car to a standard above what you would see at a main dealer.

You will find many people also get an extra oil change done between the main service intervals. 5K,15K,25K,35K or 6,18,30,42 months etc. Going on the saying that oil is cheap whereas engines are not.

see i prefer to see a main dealer stamp than some sort of fred in a shed who thinks he knows how to service a car because he had a test drive in one once, how many independents know about the ecu rewrite for certain subaru models that need to be done? not many i bet

Never pay the first price the dealers quote you. Threaten to go elsewhere and listen to the price drop to a more realistic amount (for a dealer service anyway).
