hi fella welcome to the site first of all.

for £5500 a low mileage uk classic around 99-00.

if your lucky an early uk bugeye for around that too. 2001 model perhaps.

its a buyers market at the moment for scoobs, so a bit of haggling after searching round could get you a bloody good car old chap

try a quick scan on autotrader dude. £5-6k and look for low milers with lots of paperwork and history. for your budget, its highly entertainable to get a very good clean example. they are out there

That's not really something to worry about IMHO. Clutches can go on for ages or die at an early age depending on how the car has been driven. Same goes for turbos.

80-90k should be fine. I sold my MY00 (which I'd had from new) at 72k miles, and aside from a few little dents and scratches it was practically as good as new. (Admittedly I'd had a new engine, but that was due to an oil pump failure which is very unusual on a standard UK car).

My current '96 STI has about 72k on the clock too - it needed a little TLC but drives beautifully. Don't accept any excuses, a car that feels tired and soggy has been abused - end of.

One thing to check though - at 90K the car will need the major service with belt changes - budget on up to £600 for this depending on where you get it done, and if any of the oil seals etc... need doing as well.

If the car is over 90K and hasnt had the work done, be very wary !

Note that some cars may have a lower mileage and have had them done ( my belts were changed at 65K as the oil seals went, so wont need doing again in theory until around 110K ) but make sure you have the receipts and proof if the seller says this is the case.

Also check things like tyres and brakes as they can add a lot to the cost of the car if they are going to need doing shortly after you buy it.

For your money though you should get a decent facelift classic on sensible miles ( 98 S plate onwards ) - avoid the bugeye as its ugly, heavy and slow compared to the facelift classic - they are cheap for a reason !

Luckily most of the real dogs tend to be very early imports, where youngsters who cant afford to maintain them after paying the insurance, but them and then rag the **** off them, so looking at a UK car you should be pretty safe as long as its got plenty of receipts.
