Question Selling Car Tips

Hey Folks,

I'm selling my car at the moment, I wont give you any details here and I'll try and be a 'grey' as possible as I'm hoping that this thread won't be moved as I'm not blatantly writing this just to get more exposure

It's on a number of websites, on here, SubaruForester.org, Pistonheads, Autocar, Fish4cars, Ebay etc etc ... so I think it has enough coverage, if someone was looking for a car like mine I'm pretty sure they'd have come across it by now

It's been on for about a week now.

I have some fairly good photos and the car itself is spot on It's a Japanese Import. It's the right colour, has the right spec, and has the correct mods (mapped to UK fuel and with a well known performance pack from Powerstation). It's very clean inside and out.

I think it's fairly priced and maybe a wee bit of a bargain. There are a few similar cars out there a wee bit cheaper (but they are not mapped to UK fuel - and do not have the performance pack ) but compared to same spec cars available I'm 1-2K cheaper than the same type, same spec from some import dealers

If I was in my position 6 months ago, having decided it was the type of car I wanted and looked at all the available ones on other websites I'd have bought mine

It's had a fair number of views but so far no calls and no interest. Only a few folk saying 'good luck with the sale' and what a nice car.

So my questions are:

Is there anything else I could do to sell my car more quickly ?

Can you think of any reason why there has not been any genuine interest?

Could it be because it's a fairly specialised model (i.e a much smaller market)?

Is it maybe because people are reluctant to shell out 20K on a car outwith a dealer network because of warranty/dealer backup issues (£400 buys you a warranty with the dealer who supplied/mapped it).

.... I would take a very near offer but am not just dropping it 2K to sell it when I don't actually need to, it's being sold as I can now walk to work and will only be doing about 3K miles a year.

Could it be because it's in Aberdeen and too far to travel?

Has it just not been on long enough and I'm too impatient?

Anybody with any genuine hints/tips

.... and apologies in advance if the above is too detailed, if the mods need me to remove some detail from the thread in order for it to remain here then I can easily do so ..

I have always been prepared to travel for the right car, so being in aberdeen wouldn't put me off. But if a similar spec car was a lot closer but costing a grand more I would be more inclined to go for the more pricey one. Travel costs and such are a nightmare.

But as yours is a small market I would not expect this to be a problem! My only experience of selling cars is that I always ask a little too much, as owners will always think theirs is the best example available (this may be the case ).

Just remember, even though you see other cars advertised at the same price, it doesn't mean they are selling.

Only a week?

It's taken me longer than that just to shift my old Primera, which is hardly a specialised car - it sold through the Auto Trader web site. My first scooby (totally immaculate, UK spec with some non-too-controversial Prodrive mods) took a month or so, eventually selling via an ad on SIDC.

My JDM STI took *six months* to sell, during which I had to drop the price from 'fair' to 'sickeningly cheap', and still got beaten up into giving a further discount. Not the news you'd want to hear, I'm afraid - but be patient and you might get lucky.

Yeah, my classic took 6 months to sell. It was over xmas and was heavily modded, plus in 1998 they didn't still have quite the following/interest.

lOOks like you've got all bases covered. Sit back and wait. Watch the market for similar cars and prices.

Totally agree with the above.

Everytime I have the cash for a new car it takes an age to find the right one but when I am selling it always take ages to go, always recieving a price well under I wanted.

I sold my immaculate low mileage bugeye for £8200 18 months ago after loosing 4k in 12 months. It took 6 months to go.
I was forced to partex my 172 clio after having no veiwings in 3 months again low mileage and immaculate.

The only advice I will give is don't price your car too high as all your advertising will be a waste of time and money.

Hi folks thanks for the advice.

I have a warranty that still has 1 1/2 years to run. Unfortunately Litchfields informed me it's non-transferrable to the new owner (not sure why) but for £400 they would do a 1 yr warranty.

I'd be prepared to drop my price a wee bit to accomodate some of this cost.

I'll hang on anyway as it's far too early to drop my price. I have compared it against the others on the market and feel it is a fair price.

It comes down to supply and demand. Lots of these cars on the market at the moment, just as people are starting to tighten their belts.

Try it on Exchange and Mart - the web site is far far easier than Autotrader and I received such a vast response it spooked me out - albeit my Classic import was much cheaper than £20k.
