Default Newbee wants a bug eye sti

Hi all, my name is Dan and I'm new around these parts, so please be gentle with me.
I've had a few Cossies over the years, but am tired of fixing my car more than i drive it, so the time has come to buy a Subaru. I'm looking to get a bug eye sti with PPP, but Know less than nothing about Subaru's. Could really use some hints on what to look for when buying. How do you tell a genuine sti from a kitted out wrx? And how can you tell if a car is really fitted with PPP? I really dont want to shell out all my hard earned, and find I'm 80bhp light. Also are they prone to any problems that I need to look out for. Thanks in advance Dan

hi dan. ive just sold my classic and bought one of these and must say that it is a fantastic car to drive, big improvement from the classic.there should be a certificate with the car to show that it has been fitted with the ppp, and i believe that you can double check this with subaru or prodrive.take your time and find a good, well looked after example and you wont look back.
heres a pic of mine

looks brill in the blue/black colour and only 100 ever made.

How do you tell a genuine sti from a kitted out wrx?
1) 6 speed gear box
2) STI seats
3) Intercooler is much bigger - along with the front monted scoop
4) Wheels are bigger too (usually gold)
5) Front headlights are different too.
6) Bembro Brakes are on STi;s
Im sure others will be along to help you out but you can tell an STI from WRX

Could really use some hints on what to look for when buying

1) again make sure all history adds up
2) Full service history
3) You can tell if an owner has looked after it - just use your common sence

And how can you tell if a car is really fitted with PPP?

1) should have certificate from prodrive
2) Back Exhaust should have PRODRIVE on it instead of STI
3) Look in the engine for BLUE SAMCO horses

Thanks for that, some mostly very useful info there, but I do have more questions, regarding imports. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to owning them? Are they the same as UK cars? Was the Prodrive Perfomance Pack fitted to Japanese cars? Thanks again.

Oooh you lucky so and so.

Is it a hemi?

I love em. my current favourite is the 1970 roadrunner but I would happily have a challenger, charger or barracuda.

Wish it was, it only has a 360 SB (5.9). It is a 1970 model though, and its white, so it looks like the Vanishing Point car even if it doesn't go like it.

Anyway, back to Subaru's. I'm going to look at a 2000 import tomorrow. Am I looking for all the same stuff here? Its supose to have 305bhp, but doesn't have any of the ppp tell tail fitting listed above. Do imports just have more power from factory? Or what kind of mods could give it the extra power? Dan

A bugeye reminds me of the ginger one from Girls Aloud because both of them are ugly buggars that sound quite good but its not really something that you would want to take home and show off to your mates, mutton dressed as lamb.

Imports do have more power as standard and the PPP cant be fiited to them.

Easy way to spot an import is to look for the rear wiper blade on the saloon, this isnt fitted to Euro spec cars.

Treat the Subaru as you would any car you are buying, check it over, give it a good test drive and check the owner/history out.

You can tell in most cases if the car has had a hard life, the amount of cars that i have driven away from when i have seen the house its parked outside of and the type/appearance of the individuals who are selling them is untrue.
