Would depend on why you want it or need it

2.0L 2.5l?

250 bhp or 600hp?

Long high speed runs?

Trackdays?

What temp does your oil get to?

Precautionary because of high power Mods?

Sorry not having a Pop at you, but a little background info about the engine and it's use etc might help on peeps to chose what's best

IMHO

Tony

I've got a Scoobyclinic one for trackday use on 330bhp blob STi. Road oil temps run between 80c and 90c, track oil temp tops out at 105c. Package price was £450+vat fitted.

Are those the temps after fitting?

As those are pretty much what i see without a cooler. 85-95 standard running and the peak measure on the defi's is 105.

What benefits are there with an oil cooler? Know very little about them, apart from a certain few jap models have them.

Yes engine oil temps after fitting, don't have the before as I had temp gauge fitted same time as cooler. Soaring (ie track) oil temps will eventually kill engine suddenly when oil film fails. I have a mate with an 06STi without a cooler and is car runs 100c on the road and 115c on track.

AFAIK max acceptable engine oil temp is 120c so he's considering a cooler as well. Gaz, do you track yours as then you'll see temps going up a lot. I wouldn't bother for road use.

Nope, don't track it. Just wander what/where/why and whether it's a useful mod.

(and yes, i've got a few bob i can spend on the car at the mo. )

This one does come up now and then and for road use they're not really necessary. Infact they can be detrimental to the health of the engine in two ways..!

Firstly, it'll take even longer for oil to reach optimal temp, if at all, so yo could be gunning it with cold oil..!

Second, every oil change the cooler should also be drained. Otherwise there's going to be a lot of old oil left, which will immediately contaminate the fresh stuff..!

If you're not sure, monitor your oil temps for a while..

Indeed, another point is people fail to notice there is water to oil cooler fitted anyway as standard - right above the oil filter.

In this climate in the UK, any air to air engine oil cooler should be fitted with a thermostatic device, to ensure it doesn't over-cool the oil. And its only really needed if you run huge BHP and/or rather mechanically unsympathtic when out on trackdays.

So what would be classed as too cold to boot it? And surely the temp gauge wouldn't get the temp wrong so it'd be ok once up to temp on the gauge?

I believe Mocal do a thermostatic oil cooler, so only allows oil through the radiator once upto temperature

The Scoobyclinic one on my car is thermostatically controlled. Temp rises to 80c much as without a cooler and then the flow through the cooler opens up and pegs the temp around there. Only rises beyond 80 ish when in traffic (no air across cooler) or on track (lots more heat to get rid of).

Why do people quote this? My Spec C takes no longer to come up to temp. Oil coolers can be controlled using a thremostat so there shouldn't really be any issues.

Can be being the problem, so do you know how much longer a non thermostatically controlled cooler delays operating temp..?

There's plenty of them about on ebay..!

The oem water-oil cooler actually helps the oil to reach temp too BTW..

Gussy...thanks for the post

I've been lying low since baby Dominic was born so not much has changed with the car or the bits in the garage !!

2 weeks ago I blew my OEM gearbox so the car is with Alyn for some TLC LOL

The methanol came from Roger Clark Motorsport but the label on the container says "Jennychem"

Cheers
